The Pendulum Features Thursday, November 13, 2003 *Page 13 Elon students dress up for class, men’s and women’s styles vary Students are fashionably dressed for class, amount of time spent in preparation is evident Amy Parker Reporter The typical college student can be found wearing pajamas and comfortable clothes to class. However, many Elon students put on their finest for class, either to help them feel more prepared for class, help them feel happier about themselves overall or just impress those around them. On a typical day at Elon, most women will be found dressed up, from perfectly fixed hair down to the latest stilettos heels. Although there are differ ent types of people at Elon, most people tend to dress prep py. Many women at Elon can be seen wearing polo shirts, collars flipped up, with skirts, Tiffany’s jewelry and Vera Bradley bags. The amount of effort these stu dents take to look perfectly put together early in the morning is obvious to anyone sitting in class. The usual dress code for men at Elon varies. Men’s out fits range anywhere from preppy to casual. Some men dress up and some guys don’t. Very rarely do male students wear pajamas to I never usually dress up for class because it’s just easier not to ... It all depends on the type of person. Sarah Norton, sophomore ^ ^ Jeff Heyer / Photographer Students above .enjoy lunch in Octagon sporting their diversely dressed attire as they wait to go to their afternoon classes. Students say majority of people go to class in different attire. class. They stick to the basics when it comes to clothes. Jeans, khakis, casual shirts and polos are usually staples. Since the student body is so diverse everyone has his or her own style and expresses it through his or her clothes. Many people like to feel their best, and for some people dressing up is one way to achieve that good feeling. It also helps many people feel more prepared for class. “I like to dress up because I like to take the time to look pre sentable to the professors in order to show that I care,” says student Kellyn McLamb. Although it may appeal to many women to dress up for class, there are those students who do not wish to do so. Some students pull off the roll-out-of bed-late look and do not worry what they wear to class since they are students who only get dressed up for special occa sions. “I never usually dress up for class because it’s just easier not to, although I’ve never seen my roommate not dressed up. It all depends on the type of person,” says sophomore Sarah Norton. Students who are dressed comfortably in pajama pants or t-shirts are usually found in 8 a.m. classes. Students try to get as much sleep as possible and by not dressing up, they can get up 10 minutes before class starts and make it there in time by throwing on some pajama pants. Weather is also a major con tributor to the outfit decision. With the warm weather North Carolina has been experiencing, women can be spotted all over campus wearing an assortment of sundresses, skirts, tube tops and heels or flip-flops. As the weather starts to get cooler, most girls will switch to sweaters, jeans and heels, but will still be dressy for class. Elon student Katherine Hendricks said, “At Elon you either go all out when dressing up, or you just don’t dress up at all.” Women who are dressed up usual ly have perfect hair, make-up and a stylish outfit, along with jewelry and a matching bag or purse. Rarely are women found dressed to the nines but without makeup or jewelry. There are students who choose not to dress up on a daily basis, but the majority of Elon students will be found fashionably dressed and strolling across the brick pathways on their way to class. The typical college student, of course. Those few special places that are open around the clock are adored by college students far and wide. Fortunately, there are some places within the Elon and Burlington area that are open late to satisfy your midnight cravings. Let’s talk food, because this is probably your main priority if you’re heading out at 3 a.m. Tlie first place many are bound to think of is Steak-N- Shake, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Here you can indulge in the average American meal, a steak burger and fries. But wait, they offer other options as well, such as salads, soups and of course shakes. Steak-N-Shake offers the quick and easy drive thru, as well as seating insi e. Tliis little spot might not sound very appealing to some, which is why other food joints offer the same type of late-night serv ice. For starters, we have the International House of Pancakes. Unfortunately, this is an opportunity only available on weekends, because they actually close at night during the week. But who doesn’t want a nice stack of warm pancakes on the way home from a party early Saturday morning? Or maybe eggs, bacon and sausage? Or how about a lit tle bit of everything with the restaurant very own Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity? If breakfast doesn’t strike your fancy, there IS also an extensive lunch and dinner menu. If you re really into the breakfa.st thing during the week and up for a little bit of a drive Waffle House is also open an night. Just head up the highway to exit 145 off Route 40 for breakfast served round the clock Not looking for food, but just somewhere to stroll around? Then there’s one hot srxjt most every college town has to offer: the 24- hour Wal-Mart. Buy some food, pick up some school supplies, shop for a cheap shirt or go play in the toy aisles. Finally, if you are a work-out fanatic and the gym on campus isn’t open long enough for you, there is a gym located in Greensboro that is open 24 hours a day. AC Fitness is located on east Market Street, but is only open 24 hours a day on weekdays. Membership specials are offered every month and the facilities are extensive, including your typical free weights and aer obic machines, as well as tanning, yoga, a snack/juice bar and a sauna. If you’re one of those people that doesn’t believe in wasting the night away sleeping, keep these four places in mind when trying to make each minute count.
