Next week: Exploring how this former student went through the process of making his CD, ‘‘Whispering of Public Opinion.” Virginia Galvez Reporter Getting into th6 groove has never been a problem for Elon alumnus Mark Gould. Taking his music to the public in the Elon community, Gould (‘00) will resume his weekly acoustic cover request night at Sandy’s March 4. Gould also plays at The Lighthouse once a month, and will be performing there March 10. “I want to play in front of lots of people and have them sing along to one of my originals,” Gould said. “I have been fortunate enough to have that happen on a small scale and I can’t help but smile and real ize that I have affected someone positively with my music.” Starting his musical career at a young age, Gould had a constant ear turned toward the radio and eventually to musical outlets such as, guitar and singing. While he does most of his work solo, Gould started playing in public with bands about six years ago and hopes to continue playing with different bands from time to time. As bands took up a great deal of time, Gould made his way toward the solo performances two years ago, and since then has played at local venus such as The Lighthouse and Sandy’s for his acoustic cover request night. While he has released a CD, “Whispering of Public Opinion,” Gould regards live shows with high importance as he hopes to connect with listeners. The biggest show on Gould’s horizon is a coordinated show with the lead singer from Rusted Root in April at Ziggy’s in Winston-Salem. “I really enjoy meeting other musicians that have done this a while. Those conversations are some of the best I have ever had,” Gould said. “I have much resf>ect for the community of musicians that I have been fortunate enough to share the stage with. They all have affected me positively and I try my best to show it through my music.” “I want the songs to stir up something inside of them emo tionally or just give them some thing to relate to.” Gould said. While this end result is reward ing, Gould admits there is no sci ence to writing, as all works of creativity take time and effort to bring together. “I always am writing and tak ing notes on melodies or progres sions I come across while playing ... I also write down topics I want to write lyrics about so I don’t make some oblivious chords up by chance and then for mulate the song around nothing,” Gould said. Although Gould balances a day job with his performances at night, he is always working on his music. “I currently am in the works of recording my originals live, so people can get an actual feel for what they get when they come out to see me play,” Gould said. Turning his interest of music into an emotional outlet, Gould strives to affect the listener through his solo musical works. His goal is to "to play in front of lots of people and have them sing along to one of my originals." now, I need to make sure my music and my words are on the right track before others are involved,” he said. “It just makes sense that way.” Contact Virginia Galvez at pendu- lum@elon.edu or 278-7247.
