Anna Schimmelfing jumps her way
Laura Eastes
Reporter
On Oct. 17 and 18, the United
States will get the opportunity to
watch the U.S. jump rope team take on
the world of jump roping at the World
Championships. And Elon will get to
see its very own Anna Schimmelfing
jump her way to silver.
Over the summer, Schimmelfing, a
sophomore, competed among the
world’s best jump ropers in Brisbane,
Australia. Schimmelfing qualified for
the U.S. team back in April, when her
team SkipSations placed first in the tri
als. From there she began intense
*^ractices.
Schimmelfing spent six days a
week practicing with her team. But
this was no surprise to her considering
she had already been to a world cham
pionship.
The World Championships in
Belgium were a completely new expe
rience for Schimmelfing, as well as for
her team. Being inexperienced in such
a large competition, her team made the
decision to compete to the best of
itsability and see what happened.
What happened was a surprising sec-
ond-place finish. So when she found
out she would compete again among
the world for another jump rope title, it
was no big deal. This time, she and
SkipSations knew what to expect and
how to win.
In Australia, Schimmelfing com
peted in multiple events. There were
15 teams at the meet and she per
formed against -teams such as
Hungary, Japan and Australia.
Although the gold medal was at stake,
for Schimmelfing, it was about her
team doing its best.
SkipSations jumped to another
impressive second-place finish, only
to be out scored by the Hungarians.
Individually, Schimmelfing placed
seventh.
This fall marked her ninth year in
the sport of jump roping. Growing up
in Chapel Hill, Schimmelfing joined
her middle school jump rope club for
fun and never thought much about
competing.
“I picked it up really quick,” said
Schimmelfing about her talent in jump
roping.
A coach noticed her talent and
invited her to join a jump rope team.
From there, Schimm.elfing developed
her talent in the sport. Double Dutch
became less of a game and more of a
passion. SkipSations lead her to com
peting in five to six competitions a
year, gave her experience and allowed
her to improve her performance.
Currently, Schimmelfing says she is
“just jumping for fun.”
As far as her future plans, she hopes
to possibly lead a group exercise class
involving jump roping during Winter
Term.
She also recently invited
SkipSations to perform with her in the
Habitat for Huhianity’s Showcase
Showdown. The group thrilled the
audience with their tricks.
She said it made people realize that
jump roping is more than an activity,
it’s a sport.
