Golf returns from soggy Bethune-Cookman
Brian McElroy
Reporter
The men’s and women’s golf teams got the
second part of their 2004-2005 season off to a
torrid start at the Bethune-Cooicman
Invitational in Daytona Beach. The women
finished first and the men third in fields of 11
and 12 respectively.
This was just what the women’s team need
ed after a less than solid first half where their
best placement was fourth out of 20 in tlie first
tournament of the year. Alison Mangini led the
Phoenix at the Bethune-Cookman with 74,
good enough for second place overall. Krista
Bulow (78), Kristin Tremoulis (79), Morgan
Olds (79) and Kelly Baytos (86) rounded out
the top five helping Elon beat hosts Bethune
Cookman (325), Wofford and Daytona Beach
CC who both shot 326.
The women were led by Morgan Olds in
the fall who placed first for the Elon ladies in
all but one event; her best was a fifth overall
finish at the Great Smokies Invitational with a
1-over 73. Other golfers to watch are Kristin
Tremoulis who led Elon in the Augusta State
Invitational last November. Recently the
Phoenix added young talent in Frederique
Bruell from Ohio and Danielle Mills from
Quebec who will get their shot come the
spring.
The men notched a third place finish in
Daytona, a solid placement to their already
impressive season. Keith Orlen claimed
medalist honors at the Bethune-Cookman by
winning a four man playoff. Jimmy Lytle fin
ished in second for Elon, who also made it to
the playoff.
The men have been consistent this season,
receiving two tied-for-second finishes, in fields
of 17 and 20. Their first runner-up spot came
at the Mission Inn Invitational in Mission Inn,
Florida. Winthrop beat Elon and Charleston
Southern’s overall 872 by three shots. Their
superb play continued the following week at
the Pirate Fall Intercollegiate with a second
place finish behind Charleston Southern (865)
and a tie with East Carolina who shot an 873.
The Phoenix were led in the fall season by
freshman Jimmy Lytle and junior Bennett
Smith. Lytle led Elon in three out of the six
tournaments. His best finish was a tie for sec
ond in ODU Seascape Invitational with an
even par over two rounds. Another player to
watch is Smith who led Elon in two tourna
ments with his best finish being a fifth place tic
in the Pirate Fall Intercollegiate.
Like the women, the men added four to
their team for the 2(X)5-2006 season. Among
the merits of the four new golfers include the
North Carolina Division I-A Individual Title
by Cameron Cheek and a four time North
Carolina First Team-All State honor for Jayson
Judy.
