Ashley Biscoe, Mary Caruso, Geoff Lynn and Rachel Naumann, attended the National American Chemical Society conference in San Diego to present their ongoing research projects. Sunday morning the students attended a graduate school panel followed by a chemistry graduate school fair. During the weekend, students also attended talks about the type of chemistry they were interested in. “I attended a talk about space chemistry and what NASA rs exploring with the Mars Rovers,” Caruso said. On Monday, the students present ed their research posters. “For two hours I stood by my poster during the organic chemistry session... I explained the project and answered questions from an inquis itive and diverse audience of under- grads and professors,” Lynn said. Lynn, the first Gold Water Award recipient from Elon, and Naumann, are working on how and why Liesegang reactions form, with the help of professor Joel Karty. According to Lynn, Liesegang reactions occur when an ion in a gel solution and an ion in a water solu tion mix. The two form a precipitate particle. Scientists know how to find when and where bands of parti cles will form, but have not figured out how and why they form. Lynn is one of 320 recipients of die Goldwater Award. According to http://www.act.org/goldwater, a maximum of $7,5(X) each is given to mathematics, natural sciences and engineering undergraduate students every year. Biscoe and Caruso are working on a project titled “Novel Palladium (IV) Complexes: Synthesis and Characterization,” with the help of professor Karl Sienerth. According to Caruso, these materials reduce the amount of car bon dioxide in the envii'onment. Holt, Jr. Business Leadership Award Tuesday at a luncheon in the Woods Center. The business leadership award, established at the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, recognizes a local citizen whose contributions to business and the community reflect the same pro gressive visionary leadership exem plified by Holt. The Hunts received a lead crystal sculpture and their name was inscribed on the plaque, displayed in the Love School of Business, as the 14th recipients of the award. Mrs. Hunt is the first woman to receive the award and the couple is the first to receive the award as a couple instead of an individual. “I have had so many opportunities to serve my community and my state,” Mr. Hunt said. “It is also important to have integrity and good character and good people to sur round you.” Contact Brittany Smith at pendu- lum@elon.edu or 278-7247.
