I’m just as surprised as you are; they let me write again. But I’m just going to run with it and see how far I can go with this. The situation in New Orleans is terrible as we all know. Watching CNN and all the other news stations is just like staring at a television drama, except it’s real life. I’m glad to see celebrities like Jay-Z and Diddy donate to the cause. Even the man of the hour, Kanye West, has joined the fight to end the situation in New Orleans. Speaking of Kanye, his latest album, Late Registration, which 1 know the major ity have (judging from excessively loud car stereos systems), is very impressive. I’m not saying it’s album of the year or anything (Sufjan Stevens’, Illinois, could be though), but he defmitley came with it. I’m not going to compare it with The College Dropout, because that’s stupid to compare albums. Musicians are just like people, meaning that they grow. They expe rience new things, find new inspirations. You wouldn’t compare yourself to the per son that you were two years ago, would you? I’d hope not, hopefuUy you’ll grow older and wiser and set forth to accomplish new goals. But I wasn’t totally pleased with the album. “My Way Home” should have been longer, the skits are just a waste of space and something about the title “Crack Music” just irks me (I don’t know, maybe I’m weird). Despite the attitude, the cockiness, the gripes about awards (the man was robbed) and the entire image Kanye presents, the man is talented. There are so many elements present on this album that aren’t on other rap albums popular right now. From the string sections, to the multiple samples found on many of the songs. Late Registration isn’t a classic, but sets its own standard. Late Registration for the most part has depth to it; sort of like early De La Soul or Black Sheep (not completely though). Back to more serious matters. I’m pleased with what Elon and on-campus organizations have done with the relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina. On Saturday, more than 3,000 was raised. Props to every one that contributed, and gave what they could. On Sept. 13, North Carolina’s own Little Brother will release their second album. The Minstrel Show, so make sure you pick that up. Trust me, it’ll be worth it. I’m out. Peace! Contact Rasmi Gamble at pendulum@elon.edu or 278-7247. il' it When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.” —JIml Hendrix
