Laura Hals/ Photo Editor Mary Austin Slate Reporter A much jazzier College Coffee celebrated “Fat Tuesday” this week with a Mardi Gras-themed event complete with beads, jazz music and the delicious King Cake. A bake sale manned by student volunteers was added to the weekly gathering as part of Elon’s con tinuing effort to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The money collected will go to both the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. The idea was conceived by Linda Martindale, a secretary in the Humanities department, just a few days after Katrina hit. Besides the feeling of civic responsibility that is taught at Elon, Martindale had another reason for this act of outreach. “Many people don’t know this, but during our ice storms a few years ago, their power crews worked to restore Alamance County’s power. To me, in a way, this was offering aid like they gave us,” Martindale said. Martindale’s request for help was met with enthu siasm by the faculty and staff, with some teachers offering the assistance of their students to set up and work the bake sale.
