Page 2 •Thursday, September 15, 2005 NEWS The Pendulum Mardi Gras festivities aid Hurricane Katrina survivors From p. 1 Tonya Riney’s Business Communications class. Members of the Greek community also donated their time to this cause. Some students volunteered because they received credit or service hours for class, while some, like sophomore TJ Matton, had family members or friends in the New Orleans area. Still others, including senior Rachel Copeland, volunteered simply because they felt compelled to contribute in whatever manner possible. “It’s something where we need to stand up and make things happen,” Copeland, said. “This is all part of the exciting Elon community.” The traditional free piles of fruit and bar rels of coffee were present around the Fonville Fountain, with additional tables set up around the area to accommodate the selection of food items. The baked goods were donated by over 150 people, most of them Elon faculty. Baked goods included cookies, cakes, pies, loaves of bread, brownies and the King Cake, which was auctioned off for $200. Connie Book, associate professor of com munications, submitted the winning bid for the Cake, which traditionally has a small plastic baby figurine hidden inside of it. In addition to the desserts, Elan, Elon’s Vocal Jazz group, was selling their newest CD, “Electique,” for a discounted price of $8. Five dollars from each sale went to the cause, resulting in the morning’s total intake of over $2,000. The enormous show of support from the Elon community, whether it was just stop ping by the fountain or purchasing cakes and CDs, was sincerely appreciated by Martindale and everyone who worked hard to put on the College Coffee activities. Hurricane Katrina efforts will continue throughout the year. Upcoming events include continuing to collect money at foot ball games and trips to New Orleans.
