A ^pinions@elon. edu. Kudos to Pendulum article "To the Editor: are delighted to see the Pendulum ®^dress an issue'so familiar to college stu- aents in their article on Oct. 13 regarding Preshman 15. In this article, it was sug gested that self-discipline is the key to stay- thin. We agree with moderation and ^l^nce in one’s diet and believe some ^cellent tips were given concerning mak- ^ healthy food choices; however, the idea 3t self-discipline is the key to staying thin ®y be erroneous. By emphasizing self- ‘^'=>Pline the article implies that those who are overweight or struggle with their weigh have no self-discipline. It is critical that a a community we are mindful and respectful of different body shapes and sizes We need to dispel the myth that self-disciplme is the only key to thinness. Furthermore, thinness does not reflect health. We need to be cog nizant of the relationship between genetic predisposition, healthy eating and moderate exercise in their influence on body shape and size. -Eating & Body Image Concerns Committee Lack of etiquette during cultural events To the Editor: I have become increasingly disappoint ed with the Elon community’s etiquette at cultural events, especially during eminent guest speaker events. I recently attended the Samantha Power lecture on Monday. Like all Liberal Arts Forum events, there was a question and answer session follow ing her address. About half of the audi ence in McCrary Theatre exited as the first question was being asked. This is the cur rent trend for most students who attend these events. It’s rude to the guest speak er and embarrassing for Elon. We are highly privileged to have speakers such as Francis Bok, Billy Collins and Samantha Power come to Elon. What’s more, as students, we get a free ticket. I don’t think it’s much to ask to sit for an addi tion half an hour to hear thoughtful ques tions from your peers, professors and/or members of the community. As Elon’s reputation grows and we climb higher in the best colleges lists, we need to improve our student body’s reputation, not just our academic and student pro grams’ reputation. I would hope that Elon students would have more respect for distinguished guests than we have been showing lately. ~Bryn Porter ’06 Elon rocks! Editor: l?l you the best university in the world.
