School changes not fair for student body All around Elon University, all you hear the administration talking about growth, growth, growth. Well, growth is key to this universi ty being successful in the future and being able to compete with its coun terparts in the Triad, but with grow ing comes growing pains. All these new buildings here are clearly a sign of a growing campus, and they all come with a cost. Not a monetary cost, but another type that is worse for the student body. The brand new, state-of-the-art Koury business center had no place on campus until the university decid ed to take half the intramural fields away from the students for the new business school. Besides that, construction has closed off the lower section of the McMichael parking lot. And that was only the start to the parking problem on campus. The next thing that Elon decided they needed to become a more well- known university was a law school. The university took this project on and successfully found a place for the law school. Elon decided that the old library in downtown Greensboro would be a prime spot for them. And in doing this, the university successfully split a school with just under 5,000 students into two cam puses: main campus and Greensboro campus. It would be kind of nice to keep Elon, the small size it is, all in one spot. The last project that the school has undertaken recently is a makeover of Jordan Center. Currently, Jordan Center houses 264 students, but the new complex will house a little over 500 students. Does that really help the over crowding at Elon though? In the fall of 2003, Elon had an enrollment of In two years, it has grown by 500 students, and those aren’t upperclassmen making the numbers bigger, those new freshmen. about 4,500 students. In two years, it has grown 500 stu dents due to increased rentention rate and the edition of a small amount of freshmen each year. To accommodate all the new fresh men that are coming to Elon, and also the sophomores, juniors and seniors that want to live on campus, this uni versity needs to do more than add 250 spaces for students to live. Elon University needs to build more dorm's for their student body. Another problem is where is the student body supposed to park during all of this construction. As mentioned earlier, part of the McMichael parking lot is closed to students for the Koury business cen ter being built, as well as half of ® parking over in Jordan Center is accessible to students, faculty staff while Jordan Center is being renovated. Residents of Jordan Center forced to park far away from rooms, making even a simple task o going to pick up groceries diffi^y No problem for the administratis^ though, they have parking space® that do not require a 10-to iS-min*^^^ walk. It also isn’t fair to the student body at Elon for the schoo to take away half their intraniur^ fields and then not let the students use the new club sports fi’’ ’ South campus at their leisure.
