THE PENDULUM Volume 32, Issue 10 November 2, 2006 Elon University's Weekly Student Publication "If it matters to you, it matters to The Pendulum.” WWW. elon. edu/pendulum Students volunteer on Make a Difference Day Keegan Calligar Reporter As freshman Sarah Foy gardened on Saturday morning, she expressed the impor tance of community service. “It’s really great what everyone is doing today,” Foy said. “We have a responsibility to help out the community surrounding Elon.” Foy was just one of more than 105 vol unteers who participated in Make a Difference Day on Oct. 28. More than 12 Elon organizations took part in the day, including SGA (who woke up early to make lunches for all the volunteers), the Service Learning Community, sororities, Leadership Fellows and the baseball team. Elon President Leo Lambert spoke to Volunteers early Saturday morning, and even volunteered at an area high school. Dean Jeff Stein also spoke to those par ticipating. With his family, he volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, a Raleigh-based Organization that helps high-risk children. EV! sponsored the day, and sent groups to 10 different agencies, including the American Red Cross, the Boys and Girls Club, the Burlington Housing Authority and Cummings High School. Students under took various activities including cleaning, Porting, filing and gardening. The volunteers were part of a nationwide effort to encourage individuals to partici pate in community service. Make a difference Day takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October, and has had ^'veeping success. Millions participated in the day created by USA WEEKEND maga zine. More than three million Americans Participated in last year’s Make a difference Day. Last year, Elon held a Make a Difference week. Though more opportunities to volun teer last year existed, co-coordinator sopho more Kjersti Smedley found this year’s sin gle day event to be superior. “We got a lot more people to come out for this day than they did for a whole week,” Smedley said. She cited better organization and adver tising for the change. The day helped those participating better understand the importance of volunteering. “Dean Stein spoke this morning about how volunteering is like paying your dues for living in the world,” Foy said. “Going to our different sites and seeing how much we helped really puts this into perspective. Smedley recognized the work that Elon’s volunteers were accomplishing. “They’re doing more work than one per son could do in a week or two weeks,” she said. Smedley and co-coordinators Katy Brantson and Jessica Churbock, both soph omores, found that the day exceeded their goals. “We definitely felt it was a huge suc cess,” Smedley said. “The project went as smoothly as it possibly could have.” Participators agreed. “I think that today we all worked efficiently like a chocolate chip cookie, each of us reaching out for the small chips among the big cookie of socie ty,” freshman Megan Schneider said. “In all seriousness, each of us put forth a great effort in bettering just a small part of Alamance today and it was definitely worth all the smiles!” Contact Keegan Calligar at pendulum@elon.edu or 278-7247. Correction In last week’s edition of The Pendulum, a brief story ran about the Elon seniors gathering to watch Monday Night Football. The story incorrectly reported that the Student Government Association sponsored the event. The SGA helped organize the event but it was spon sored by Elon Alumni Relations.
