The Pendulum NEWS Thursday, November 9, 2006 • Page 7 Students move into The Oaks From p. 5 suites in The Oaks. “This was an especially sticky problem,” Stein said. “How do you assign people with their roommates when they are coming to Elon as many as three weeks apart?” he asked. “We had to consolidate.” Stein said staffers tried to match at least two intended Oaks suitemates, but even that proved unworkable in some cases. “That’s the problem with trying to find beds for 400 students in such a short period of time,” he said. The school had to work hard to find the extra beds. They had to convince the own ers of the new apartment complexes. Partner’s Place and Campus Trace, that housing students for half a semester was a good thing. “Availability was a big difficulty,” Stein said. “There weren’t a lot of places that Wanted students for less than a semester.” University officials even appeared before the Elon’s Town Council to request an exemption from the town’s policy man dating no more than three unrelated resi dents in a dwelling. Providing storage space and a tram serv ice seemed obvious steps, he said. Reimbursing students for rent seemed the fair thing to do as well. Students are receiv ing $25 Phoenix Cash for eveiy week they are displaced. Stein realizes that this com pensation cannot fully alleviate frustrations, but he hopes it will help. Tammy Hill, program assistant for Residence Life and Service Learning, said parents and students dealt with the construc tion delays surprisingly well. She said that although the longer delays increased frustration, both students and par ents have been supportive of Residence Life, even sympathizing with them. They realize that we are not making this happen,” Hill said. “Even with someone who has really been inconvenienced, I can still feel that Elon connection.” Students seemed content with the com pensation plan but it’s still difficult to move-in twice in one semester. “It’s just hard to feel really setded in,” Troxler said, “when you know you aren’t in the place you’re supposed to be.” Contact Dcmica Sands at pendulum@elon.edu or 278-7247.
