New Century plan overview p. 12 Is sustainability possible? p. 5 Students charged with felonies p. 2 ENDULUM Eton University’s Weekly Student Publication ^Dorm storm^ helps homeless Ashley Barn as Reporter Last Friday, three students drove to a local homeless shelter to deliver products purchased with money collected from Catholic Campus Ministry’s Winter Term “Dorm Storm.” Over Winter Term, Catholic Campus Ministry [CCM] members participated in the “Dorm Storm” to collect money for buying products to donate to Allied Churches of Burlington. Eight students, split into four groups of two, stormed the dorms on campus to collect money. The small groups gathered mostly change, some bills and from one generous student, $20. Even without Danieley and most of The Oaks, the CCM students were able to collect an overwhelming $441 by the end of the night. Senior Beth Costy, head of the Community Service Committee for CCM, says she was apprehensive about the idea of a Dorm Storm at first, but was eventually convinced by the other members. After collecting donations during the Dorm Storm, Costy, accompanied by fellow CCM officers Christen Aquino and Christine Monllos, went to Costco in Greensboro and bought $438 worth of forks, knives, spoons, cups, toilet paper, plates, bowls and napkins. Last Friday, Costy, Lisa Rohde and Michael Gissy drove an Elon van to Allied Churches to dehver the goods. Nutritional Director Michelle Embree gave a brief tour of the facility and explained that they feed anywhere from 70 to 160 homeless people per meal. “This was awesome,” Embree said. “If everybody did a little bit, there’s no reason for anyone to be hungry in this country. What you did today was really valuable.” Contoa Ashley Bamas at pendulum@elon edu or at 278-7247 Ashley Barnas/ Photographer (Above) Senior Beth Costy receives a hug of thanks from Allied Churches Nutritional Director Michelle Embree.
