iTtWKStfe^ E2 unites memb^ of the Elon commtutiity Continued from page I One feature frequent online social networkers will enjoy is E2’s closed network. Members must register in the Elon system or have a student in the system to join. E2 is also funded entirely by Elon, so the network will remain ad-free. Like Facebook, E2 allows students to form groups and plan events, and the site also provides a Top Ten Photo Gallery for each user to upload ten photographs. Another feature different from Facebook and MySpace is the more professional atmosphere of the site. “It’s built like Facebook,” Parsons said, “but it’s more professional. You’re able to post r^sum^s and portfolios. You’re able to work with future employers and alumni.” In fact, the only public aspect to E2 is employers’ access to r^sumds and portfolios. To keep up with the professional atmos phere of the community, the terms of serv ice outlines Elon University’s policies that must be followed on the site. Each page includes a red flag for visitors to alert moderators of inappropriate content. However, inappropriate content is not a concern for Anderson or Parsons. Parsons said that “E2 will police itself. You don’t want to have a picture of you drinking right beside a resume or portfolio.” Susan Cogwell, a freshman beta user of E2, said she’d “use E2 for communicating with my professors since it’s more personal than regular e-mail. I’d also use it for connecting with other students about stuff specific to Elon, like my classes or my sorority.” The purpose of the community is to also appeal to more mature audiences. “Unlike Facebook, you’ll be able to list academic interests because we want faculty to be able to list their area of study,” Anderson said. Another feature of E2 is its extended membership. “After you graduate, you no longer have access to Elon e-mail or Blackboard, but with E2, you create a separate account and it’ll last forever,” Anderson said. For how simple and professional E2 looks, only three people have built this site: web applications developer John David Parsons, Web site manager How do I sign up? You can join E2 by going to https://e2.elon.edu/. Choose a user name and make a profile page similar to those on Facebook or MySpace. David Morton and graphic designer Chris Eyl. “It’s probably one of the biggest projects I could ever imagine taking on,” Parsons said. “These other sites have 20 programmers. We have a team of three people doing this entire project.” Anderson said, “we encourage people to join, but they should expect bugs.” Contact Ashley Lawton at pendulum@elon. edu or at 278-7247 E2 features - Ad-free network - Space to post resumes and portfolios - Closed network - Membership lasts after graduation - Profile page - Space to post photos - Social forum for students, professors, parents and alumni Students cycle to raise for Push America WHAT SETS YOU APART IS WHAT MAKES YOU ONE OF US.
