FEBRUARY 17. 2010//PAGE 13 Former Elon players return to alma mater to coach Chris Dockrill, women’s golf Player: Graduated: 1986 Interesting fact: Played for men’s golf coach Bill Mornlngstar. Accomplishments: All- American and an Academic All-American. Coach: Years at Elon: 10 Interesting fact: Was the assistant coach for Bill Morningstar for two seasons before taking over as head coach. Accomplishments: 2007 SoCon Coach of the Year, led the Phoenix to a fourth place finish in the SoCon tournament in 2007, Big South Coach of the Year during 1999-2000. Dockriil’s impressive amateur career: Before attending Elon, Dockrill started his golf career as the National 16 & under Canadian Champion in 1979. He also played in the Canadian Amateurs from 1982-1983. Assistant Coaches Keith Gaither, Wide Receivers coach 2009 first season with the Phoenix football program Player: four-year starter for defensive back for Elon Graduation date: 1999 Charlie Porterfield, Director of Football Operations 2009 first season with the Phoenix football program Player: 2007 team captain for Elon Graduation date: 2008 2009 first season with the Phoenix football program Player: Averaged 41.5 yards on 40 punts during his senior season Graduation date: 2009 Brandon Lane, Defensive Assistant Coach Classmates, now coaches Michael Leona Men’s tennis head coach Michael Leonard and baseball head coach Mike Kennedy both graduated in 1991 from Elon University. During their time here, both players had success in their respective sports: Kennedy led his team to the NAIA World Series and Leonard led his to a national championship. “I knew Kennedy. We were in the same class together,” Leonard said. “I remember watching him play. He was a great catcher.” Kennedy said he knew Leonard pretty well when they went to school together. “He and I had some (good) times together at Elon,” Kennedy said. Kennedy remembers Leonard, and also taking class with the head men’s tennis coach at the time, Tom Parham. Both coaches have taken different paths to return to their alma mater after graduation, but both agree that Elon is like a family to them. “I’ve been here in some form or fashion since fall of 1988,” Kennedy said. “I know a lot of people. My family is very, very comfortable here. It is a neat place.” Mike Kennedy, baseball Player: Graduated: 1991 Accomplishments: Two-time honorable mention All-American catcher. Favorite memory: “Probably my greatest memory would be going to the NAIA World Series in 1989, in Idaho.” Biggest change from 1991: “To be able to see all that has taken place has been pretty neat. I almost forget how it looked back in the day because there are so many changes.” Coach: Years at Elon: 14 Accomplishments: Won three Southern Conference Championships (2006, 2008, 2009) — 2002 marked the first time an Elon baseball team made it to the NCAA tournament with an NCAA Regional appearance. Favorite memory: “My finest memory is just the guys. The players that have come and gone ...
