commencement 2011 Schedule of Events for Undergraduate Commencement Friday, May 20 Dean's Receptions for Graduates and their Families 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Graduates are invited to bring their families and guests to their academic residence and mingle with faculty in Elon College and the schools of Business, Communications and Education. Eion College, the College of Arts and Sciences Lindner Hall Patio (rain location: Lindner Foyer) Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Chandler Fountain/Plaza (rain location: First Floor, Koury Business Center) School of Communications Manfuso Plaza (rain location: Studio B, McEwen Communications Building) School of Education Mooney Patio and Lawn (rain location: Curriculum Resource Center, Mooney 111) Baccalaureate 3 p.m., Alumni Gym Elon’s Baccalaureate ceremony is a service of celebration for the Class of 2011 and of thanksgiving for campus community that is dedicated to their achievements. The Reverend Andrew More O’Connor will deliver the address. Celebration of Leaders of the Twenty-First Century 5 p.m., McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts Graduating Business Fellows, Communications Fellows, Elon College Fellows, Honors Fellows, Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows, Lumen Scholars, Elon Teaching Fellows, and Periclean Scholars will be recognized at a pre-Commencement ceremony that highlights their talents and accomplishments. Overflow seating will be available in Yeager Recital Hall, directly adjacent to McCrary Theatre, as seating in McCrary is limited. Saturday, May 21 Continental Breakfast on Scott Plaza 7:30 - 9 a.m. Graduating students, families and guests are invited to a super sized continental breakfast around Fonville Fountain. The celebration is hosted in the spirit of College Coffee, one of oldest and most appreciated traditions of Elon’s academic year. The popular campus wide event brings faculty, students and staff together in a relaxed atmosphere to build community and forge friendships. Prelude to Commencement 9:15 a.m., Under the Oaks Families and guests should be seated by this time. Music is performed live from Whitley Auditorium, home to the university’s Alyce Smith Cooper organ. Elon University 121st Commencement 9:30 a.m. The Commencement processional will begin the formal ceremony. Graduates will process from the stage to their seating area. The commencement address will be delivered by Vice Admiral William E. Gortney 77, director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon. Gortney has most recently served as the Pentagon’s official spokesperson for the U.S. military operations in Libya. Before his appointment to the Joint Staff in 2010, he served as commander of the U.S. Naval Forces' in Central Command as well as the commander of the 5th Fleet in Bahrain. A 1996 Naval War College graduate, Gortney has received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star, and three graduated Meritorious Service Medals, among others, for outstanding service to the U.S. military. Reception for Graduates Fonville Fountain The Elon Alumni Association invites graduates, families and guests to a reception hosted by academic departments around Fonville Fountain immediately following Commencement. Elon Oak saplings and alumni association information packets will be distributed to graduates in front of Powell Building.
