With Fonville Fountain in the background, Clinton spoke to nearly 2,000 people on behalf of his wife, Hillary Clinton, who was campaigning for the 2008 presidential election. And Bill didn’t waste any breath push ing Hillary’s platform before the primaries on May 6. “[Hillary Clinton] is the best change maker I have ever known, and if I had never been married to Hillary but had just known her, I’d still be working as hard for her. We just need a better system, and Hillary will give it to you,” Bill said. Elori was a crucial stop for Hillary’s campaign trail as the surrounding rural commu nity and student population at Elon resonated well with Hillary’s economic platform. Daniel Shutt, then president of College Democrats, reacted well to Bill’s speech. “Clinton’s speech focused primarily on issues like jobs, health care and gas prices, and people responded well North Carolina has been hit hard by this recession, and Clinton spoke to our concerns very effectively.” That year, Clinton also vis ited Wake Forest University on April 18 and sent his daughter Chelsea to speak to other campuses.
