.X Campuls Crier. ■r . , A STUDENT GOVERNMENT NEWSLETTER ^ c /olume 1 Numoer 5 Pobruary 13, 1963 lEhirtif^/nL When you pick up the yearbook , this year and leaf through the activities section, you nay cone to the conclusion that it should bo titled, "This Is Your Life." For, by the tine you reach the end of this section, you will be familiar with most of the faces. Why? Because, using a well-known statenent, "the same people do everything." This is not a problem limited to our campus, nor is it a startling now one. There will always be those with more am bition, more energy, more interest than others. There must be leaders. But, there are a few points worth pondering, even if vreather-beaten. This year, there do seem to be more students really working in SGA and this may be a result of Mr. Buie's committee-recuiting plan. After his election, he posted sign up lists where all interested students could indicate their desire for committee work. Then, he oper ated on the idea that no student serve on more than two committies. So what do we have: small commit ties? Not exactly, but the "same student" group has groxm a little larger. The sad thing is that we are vfell-supplied at Elon with peo ple who are capable and industrious,■ but who do not participate in SGA. This leads to the question ask ing "Why?", and answer, we usually get such remarks as, "No tine," "Other interests," "I don't care," "No ability," "I donjt know how to get the job" and "I don't know what there is to’ do." The first four answers have been replied to by ex plaining, "informing, cutting, en couraging and. even begging until jDlue in.the f§i.ce;i^_Tlae last two ans wers, we can do something about. PjndingjQl^t who is interested—com- nunication—seems to be the problem, especially with the Freshmen. Com mittee sign-up lists posted when initial appointments are formed and when vacanies occur during the year? It goes something like this: "Who do you KNOW that might be able to do this job?" "Oh, I KNOW so-and-so." This personal element is too often the basis. If an interested student ’ doesn't know those who appoint, he goes unused. Therefore, whose re sponsibility is it to set up the introduction agency? Would it perhaps be a good idea to have several sign-up sheets post ed throughout the year?
