Tonight I watched ELon play Lenolr-Rhyne in the College Bowl, and I feel that they did a very good job. They won the match quite handily, but lost the two-game set. It is truly unfortunate that the contest could not be com pleted, for the moderator ran out of questions with seven minutes left in the period! At this time, Sion was gaining steadily on Lenoir Rhyne, but the con tent was declared over. Our SGA has lodged a protest, and I feel that this is a justified action. Participation in this event is quite a good thing for our school. It de velops both school pride, and a more favorable attitude towards academics. On a broader scale, participation by a group of students such as we had is quite beneficial to the image of our school which we present to students in other schools. I congratulate Larry Biddle, Bill Blomberg, Don Johnson, John Jones, and Tom Page, all of whom have represented Elon most aptly. I also wish to thank Valerie Spangler for the many hours of work ghe put in as campus co ordinator for. the event. I understand that our SGA is planning some improvements in the set-up of our Orientation Committee. I think that this is very good. It seems to me that -it is a poor idea to have a sophomore, no matter how talented, serving as Chairman of the Orientation Committee. It seems much more reasonable to select an upperclassmn.n,who is more avjare of the workings of the SGA and the school to direct this than a sophomore. Most schools operate under the theory’that a senior is best qualified to orientate freshmen, but we have been following a new light. Before the planned improvements were mentioned, I fenred that we would soon begin a program of selecting a freshman at ran dom- to serve as Orientation Committee Chairman, perhaps believing that a freshman would know best what he should be taught. However, this will not come about, and I am reassured by this.. Revisions and improvements are need ed and should be welcomed.’ ’ -, ■ ' ' , Christmas Will soon be here , and I hope you all get lots of. presents con sisting of such goodies as textbooks and ballpoint pens. The national organiza tion has been criticized by the editors of the paper as one,,.established to line the pockets" of the publishers. Each year a book corfta'ining the names and activities of those chosen is published, and members can buy the book as well as-other items. The editors said that "better" schools in the United States don't par.ticipate.. The editor of the paper, Charles Osolin, who was hiitself elected to "IVho's TVho" said the editorial board of the paper questioned the criteria for some of the Wake Forest selections this year. An editorial indicatedr-that polit ical feelings" and friendships were involved. He said that "Who Ain t" was not meant to be farcical. n , + ^ ^ "I'/hile our selections were made as a protest...we are pleased to recognize 25 more seniors who have made signal contributions to the life of the college during their four years here," he said. Osolin also said that the editorial board was displeased because the college selected only 25 students out of the 30 memberships it was allotted. The above information was taken from the GREENSBORO DAILY NElfS. On Saturday, December 14, the Freshman Class will sponsor a dance in the Student Union.
