reasonable to check rooms at 1:00 in the afternoon? Is it possi7ole that
because one is a counselor, the instances in which she deserves a call
down are ignored or overlooked by other members of this inner sanctum?
Is it reasonable to have room check for girls on closed study at one
minute past 7:30? Is it fair fcr a hostess or council member to adjust
the clock according to their time, when it is entirely possible that
girls have left the dorm just prior to this and have set their watches
by that clock, the indisputable reference?
It has come to the attention of more than one girl living in the dor
mitory that some persons deem it their right to play God upon being
elected to council. Since a council member is also a resident of the
dorm and merely a representative to enforce the rules, it would seem
wise for each member to realize that this does not entitle her to ex
emption from the rules, particularly if she should be placed on proba
tion after the first semester as counselor. It may be added at this
point that the attitude of the counselor and the way she represents her
self in her enforcement of the rules are factors v;hich determine v;hether
or not she will have the respect of the remaining girls. This is not
intended as a criticism of the council as a whole, but merely of those
few v;ho make a sincere attempt at making life difficult for the "coun
selled" and thus destroy the intended effect of the council.
Part II: ELECTION APATHY
Every member of Elon's student body is required to pay Student Govern
ment dues, but how many people make use of the privileges their S.G.A.
cards grant? For example, the number of students who take time to vote
for Senate members, S.G.A. officers, or even the Homecoming Court is so
low that it is no wonder we are regarded as apathetic. The usual per
centage of student voters is around 20 per cent, and this is unreason
ably low. If one is to pay $8.00 per semester as a student government
membej:j it- seems that he should want to participate in the elections of
those persons who will have authority over the student body for a whole
year. Admittedly, the majority of students are busy people and cannot
always be expected to remember their S.G.A. cards. If this requirement
were changed, is it not possible that the percentage of voters would
rise? Perhaps the Board of Elections could compile a list of paid mem
bers v;hose names could be crossed off upon voting. In any case, some
thing is needed to incite negligent students into taking advantage of
their rights, and this is one suggestion.

Regretfully, I must announce the sudden departure of my partner in crime
