by the Editors Every now and then we like to climb down from our Ivory Tower (surrounded by a red brick wall) and take a good look at whatever is happening in the outside world; so we hope you will pardon us if we occasionally in- dulge in our observations and "call 'em as we see 'em." Elsewhere in this issue you will find some rather candid comments by Tom Ward con cerning this month's elections, to which we would like to add our own remarks on the subject. It is our hope that we can make many students more aware of—and more interested in—their own government. We regard the sweeping comeback of the Republican party as a very good sxgn, not just for the G.O.P, itself but for the whole country as well. Until now the political picture seemed bleak: a rubber-stamp Congress spending money it didn't have; lazy and complacent Democratic leadership in many states; and Republican factionalism which threatened to destroy the party itself rather than the opposition. Certainly, these condi tions have not been completely eradicated, but at least there are some tangible results which may indicate the immediate future for both po- litical parties: the G.O.P. now has an abundance of leaders—mostly with moderate views—who should help scrap the party's current image as a group of greedy-white-Protestant reactionaries; the Democrats will have to improve their organizations in many Northern cities and Southern states, stop presuming that they have certain voters in their hip- pockets, and select better candidates for office. As for the new Con gress, It will be cautious and selective about the President's programs, ut neither conservative nor anti-Administration in its make-up. Concerning North Carolina politics, the few Republicans who bothered to run for orfice made a good enough showing to revitalize the whole party, which It has needed ever since the voters Buried Goldwater In '64. Of course, the Democrats are in no great danger of losing their grip on the state, but they should realize by now that their favorite theme, continued progress," is neither as appealing nor as truthful as it was after Reconstruction. With a larger G.O.P. dele gation watching over a Democratic legislature, the cause of good gov ernment for all Carolinians will have been advanced. One of the best statements we have run across in trying to sum up the results of November 8th comes—strangely enough—from President Johnson, who remarked afterward that it was "a good day for the two-party sys tem in the United States." Amen to that. ************ MOVIE SCHEDULE FOR PALL SEMESTER 11/20/66 SOME CAME RUNNING (color & CinemaScope) 12/11/66 CIMARRON (color & CinemaScope) 1/8/67 POLLYANNA (color) 1/15/67 THE YEARLING (color) 1/22/67 THE YOUNG LIONS (CinemaScope) 1/29/67 WE'RE NO ANGELS (color)
