It is sad commentary on students when we scream for responsibility in the areas of drinking rules, girls rules, chapel attendance honor systems, and even dorm visitation and are met by arguments of the lack of student responsibility as far as stealing from the cafeteria ( perish the thought ), cheating on tests, breaking into cigarette machines , charging L.D. calls to the school, and general vandalism. ' . Granted, there are ways to look^at this: the few students who laugh in the face of the little responsibility they.have, do jeopard ise the few liberties of the majority,but as in the case, of' other classic situations, those starved of freedom are forced to miss it. No one can condone the actions of those above mentioned culprits, nor for that matter excuse them. Theft, cheating, and vandalism have no honor no ' matter what the cause. But in laying the blame one must look with scrut iny at any system which might even encourage such misaction. If our admissions system is deserving of the wisdom accredited to it, then we should presume that it weeds out the "orig inal sinners." Thus one might presume that most crooks at Elon were created and nurtured under the system at Elon. A need for change.is obvious but not al together progressive.. The honor system we have enjoyed may have become too permissive we may need to live under less to appreciate its value. But by the same token, girls hours 9
