Sigma Rho Sigma
Organied
With Dean Joseph H. Douglass
presiding, and with Dean T. E.
McKinney of Johnson C. Smith
University as guest speaker, the
Sigma Rho Sigma Honor Schor-
ship society was formally estab
lished at State on Sunday, March
12, 1950. Professor Allen H. Brown,
instructor in the Department of
Physical Sciences, and faculty
sponsor of the newly- organized
society, introduced the speaker,
and Dean Douglass presented the
candidates for membership in Sig
ma Rho Sigma.
“The Scholar’s place in the
world today,” declared Dean Mc
Kinney, “is a most significant
one. He must have courage to
speak his mind not on the plat
form alone, but by means of the
pen. He must work toward every
man’s gaining his basic rights as
guaranteed by the Declaration of
Independence and by the Cons
titution of the United States.”
An even dozen students were
inducted into the Society as fol
lows: Lucille Brown, Channie
David, Zebulon Gordon, William
Hill, Lottie Munn, Virginia Mc
Millan, Gaither Perkins, Herbert
Spruill, Ernestine LaGrande, Bes
sie Pridgeon, Jonathan Smith and
Annie Mae Witherspoon.
Spaulding Is
Vesper Speaker
Employing as his subject,
“What Is Wrong With Us?” Dr.
C. C. Spaulding, nationally known
business man and pioneering pres
ident of the North Carolina Mut
ual Life Insurance Company with
headquarters at Durham, was the
vesper speaker at the Fayetteville
State Teachers College on Sun
day, February 25.
Dr. Spaulding spoke out of the
richness of an eventful life, and
his address was well received by
students and friends from the
community.
Prexy Announces
‘1’ Summer Session
According to information re
cently released by Dr. James Ward
Seabrook, there will be but one
summer session this year due to
the fact that plans to convert the
dining hall into a cafeteria have
already been perfected. The sum
mer session will get under way on
June 5 and will be concluded on
July 13, 1950.
Robinson Takes
Doctorate In
Sociology
Even-tempered, 36- year old
Leonard Harrison Robinson, who
hails from far-away Arkansas and
who won a prize for reading Tar-
zan of the Apes at the age of
eight, is State's newest faculty
member to have placed behind
his name that mystic sign called
“Ph.D.” At the Ohio State Uni
versity, Dr. Robinson’s areas of
concentration were Social Theory
and Social Organization with min
ors in Intergroup Relations, Meth
ods of Research and Cultural An
thropology. The title of his dis
sertation is, “Negro Street Society:
A Study of Racial Adjustment in
Two Southern Urban Commun
ities.” The Doctor of Philosophy
Degree was formally conferred on
March 17, 1950.
Dr. Robinson has been active
in education for many years. After
completing the high schon! work
at the Lincoln High School in
Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he
played varsity football, baseball
and track, and after completing
the freshman year as a scholar
ship student at Knoxville College,
he moved on to Wilberforce Uni
versity where he majored in so
ciology and where he was grad-

Dr. Leonard H, Robinson was
awarded the Doctor of Philosophy
Degree at the Ohio State Univer
sity on March 17. Some call him
“Buddha.” His area is Sociology.
‘Y’ Federation Day
The local Christian Associations
observed World Student Christian
Federation Day of Prayer Sunday,
February 19 in Smith auditorium.
The Reverend M. L. Williams, pas
tor of the Mount Sinai Baptist
Church, was the guest speaker.
Lucille Brown, chairman of the
“Y” Worship Committee and
James Pelham, president of the
Y. M. C. A., presided.
Mr. Henry Jones ,representing
the Y. M. C. A., Mr. Jonathan
Smith, representing the campus
Sunday School, and Miss Lucille
Brown of the Y. W. C. A. at
tended on February 4 a religious
conference held at Chapel Hill.
The purpose of the conference was
to make more meaningful Christ
ianity amoung all peoples.
Too, five delegates were sent
to the area conference of the
Southern Region of the Y. W.
C. A. held on February 11 in
Greensboro. At this meet. Misses
Cloethia Faison, Marie Chestnut,
Queen Esther Pitt, Mary Tucker,
and Bessie Johnson represented
the local Y. W. C. A. In progress
are the Lenten services, the cloth
ing drive and the World Student
Service Fund drive.
