FSII HONORS TOP STATE LEGISLATORS 0]V CAMPUS MAR. 7
About 200 persons at
tended a dinner in the H. L.
Cook dining hall at FSU
March 7, honoring Sen. John
Henley of Cumberland
County, the presid^t pro tern
of the state Senate and House
Speaker James Green of
Bladen County.
The FSU planning task
force, chaired by Ralph
Potter, sponsored the event.
The task force, initiated
almost a year ago, is a
voluntary citizens group that
assists in planning for the
University.
Dr. Charles “A” Lyons,
Jr., Chancellor of the
University told the audience
that it was unusual for two
legislative leaders such as
Green and Henley to both
come from the same area.
Dr. Lyons later presented
the t\vo men with plaques
bearing the FSU seal. Henley
and Green were also
presented plaques honoring
them for their service to their
communities and to the state.
University of North
Carolina President William
Friday also received a plaque
with the FSU seal from
Chancellor Charles “A”
Lyons, Jr., and President
Friday said that the
University system and this
campus are the beneficiaries
of the concerns of these two
men.
Earlier the two men were
given a briefing on the
building needs of the campus.
The needs include a new
science building, a new health
and physical education
building and the restoration of
a wing to the Butler academic
center which was cut out
because of insufficient funds.
Henley said that he felt
some of FSU’s needs would be
given high priorities if the
“state funds are better than
what the Advisory Budget
Commission anticipated”
when it proposed the 1975-77
state budget.
Green said that after his
tour of the campus: “Some of
the buildings are old and need
renovations or need replacing.
How fast we will be to provide
those needs, none of us know
because of the uncertain
economy and its effect on
budget predictions.”
“FSU is a viable unit” in
the State’s higher education
system. Green said.
