October 18, 1989 The Broncos' Voice Page 7 Entertain ment S.M.A.S.S.H. P. T. L. Rock (Pierre T. Leonidas) and his deejay Spin Master K. (Kenneth Johnson) are S.MA.S.S.H. (“Suckers Move and Suckers Suffer Hurt!") - a super dynamic New York duo, who plan to take the world of Hip Hop by storm with their “pulsating’, hip-swaying’ and sho’ nuff def beats and rhymes”. S.M.A.S.S.H. has reason to rejoice because they will soon be headed to rap superstardom when their debut release, "I Got A Feeling", is released in early October on 8th Street Records. The road to landing a record deal was anything but easy for S.MA.S.S.H. Like many rap artists they discovered that just going into a studio and laying tracks fora demo tape was not enough. S.MAS.S.H. soon faced the grime reality that in shopping their tape for a deal that they were competing with hund reds of other artists. It was hard for them to even get an appointment with record company executives but when they persisted they were quickly ushered in and out - with no assurance that their tape was even listened to. S.MAS.S.H.s lucky break came in a strange way. One day after they had completely exhausted themselves shop ping their tape with several Manhattan record labels they decided to stop at McDonald s on Broadway for a quick bite to eat. While there they noticed a well dressed man enter with several records under his arm. Nervously they approached him and asked if he worked for a record company. They were surprised that the man did not work for record company but was, in fact, president of a record label. Michael Logan, who is affection-ately known throughout the music industry' as Mighty Mike, was the man. After listening to S.MAS.S.H.’s material Mighty Mike was eager to sign them to a recording contract on his 8th Street Records label. P. T. L. Rock, 21, and Spin Master K., 21, hail from Jamaica, Queens, New York where they met while students at Van Wyck Junior High School 217. They soon combined their skills and performed throughout junior high and high schools on a variety of shows which Assignment 8/9 or Cooking with C. I. Brown Ask any student who has had Education 310: Founda tions of Education with me and each will tell you that even though much of the course amounts to "busywork" it is nonetheless “quite a thought experience." Assignments 8 and 9 of Education 310: Foundations of Education are optional, i.e., assignments 8 and 9 requires the student to go beyond the minimals and do a research/creative project. As a result, 1 have on file research/creative projects of every description. But perhaps the most unique of all received was Chris Carson’s “Symbolic Educational Culinary Delights.” So if you are intellectually hungry and the foregoing sentence has managed to whet your appetite, read on and gorge yourself on the following cerebral feast. PEDAGOGICAL PIE Ingredients: pinch of Piaget's cognitive development stages dash of Dewey’s learning by experience 2t Herbart’s four-step instruction plan sprinkle of Spencer’s utilitarian education a few drops of Rousseau’s student-initiated learning ideas 2 pints Pestalozzi's love and security 1 heaping handful Hutchin liberal arts curriculum 1 9" ready make Comenius crust dispelling child depravity theories Instructions Preheat oven to 375 F. Form the Comenius crust into a regular size pie pan. In a medium size bowl, rapidly mix the 2 pints of Pestalozzi, the few drops of Rousseau and the 2 teaspoons of Herbart. Pour contents into a saucepan and bring to a boil, gradully adding the sprinkle of Spencer, the dash of Dewey, the heaping handful of Hutchins and the pinch of Piaget. Allow the mixture to simmer for 4-5 minutes. If mixture gets too thick, add an additional half pint of Pestallozzi’s love and security. Pour contents into the Comenius crust, and place in oven for 20-25 minutes. This scrumptious delicacy should prove to be an objective and practical pedagogical pie for the teacher’s tastebuds. FOUNDATIONAL FRUITCAKE Ingredients: 2C Philosophical flour influencing instructional methods 3 large Political peaches providing legislative power 2 Economical eggs holding together school programs 2 Legal lemons adding judicial accent 1 1/2C Sociological sugar initiating school reform 1 can Professional pine apples pursuing higher standards It Psychological salt explaining cognitive flavor 1 can Futuristic fudge icing indicating improve pro spects Instructions: Preheat Historical oven to 375 F Mix the 2 cups of Phllsophi- cal flour, the 2 Economical eggs, the 1 1/2 cups of Sociological sugar and the teaspoon of Psychological salt into a medium-size bowl. Then add the 3 large Political peaches, the 2 legal lemons, and the can of Professional pineapples. Pour contents into a cake pan and b£ike in the developmental heat of Histoiy’s oven for 25 minutes. Allow for cooling, then add the Futuristic fudge icing to top off a fundamentally balanced dessert. CONCEPTUAL CASSEROLE Ingredients: 1/2C Idealistic traditional platonic philosophy 1/2C Realistic compart mentalized bodies of knowledge included an anti-crack rally; as well as, a special guest appearance on "Goldie's Hot Raps" cable TV show. Upon graduation, P. T. L. Rock was accepted at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida and he matriculated there during his freshman year. Meanwhile, Spin Master K. left New York for a lengthy vacation in Hawaii. He later returned and enrolled at LaGuardia Community College where he is currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration. P. T. L. returned to New York and enrolled in Hunter College where he is presently completing his BA. degree in Business. S.MAS.S.H. soon re united and decided that it was time they become more serious and try to land a record deal. P. T. L. busied himself writing lyrics and Spin Mater worked on beats. They soon went to 12-12 and K-Rock Studios and recorded "Dope Def, ‘Je t’aime (“I Love You’’)’’, “Break The Barrier", "Ramone", "Rock the Floor” and "1 Got A Feeling". After their recording was completed they decided to first put together their stage show. Hip and Hop, two unique male dancers who “actually flip off of the wall" and who appear in the Black By Demand video soon added their reputed dancing talents to an already "red hot" show. S.M AS.S.H.’s debut release on 8th Street Records is the 12"-single "I Got A Feeling”. “1 Got A Feeling" is a house/Hip Hop/dance tune which boasts: '"i Got A Feeling That Somebody Is Trying To' Bite My Rhyme", “And If I Catch Them - Their Behind Is Mine" . . . P. T. L. Rock says of their debut release, "We want this song to launch us as. a platinum act. We want S.M.A.S.S.H. to become a household name".
