Jeff Capel has coached in the
Dean Dome.
He has spent his time at Reynolds
Coliseum, Cameron Indoor Stadium
and Cole Field House.
He's been all along Tobacco
Road.
"I don't need to be in the Atlantic
Coach Conference," says Capel, who
is completing his first season as head
coach at Fayetteville State
University which is scheduled to
play today in the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association
basketball tournament in Norfolk,
Va.
FSU, 7-19, meets Hampton
Institute, 15-10, at 1 p.m. in The
Scope. Hampton defeated FSU 74-
58 in an earlier contest that was
stopped with 3:06 remaining because
of a fight. Three Hampton players
and FSU's Chuck Brown were
placed on probation.
Capel says the Hampton incident
will serve as a motivating factor
because the game was closer than
the final score indicated.
The Broncos are led by Odis
Bellinger, a 6-foot-4 senior guard
who is averaging 17.5 points and 6.5
rebounds per game. Junior guard
Darrell Armstrong averages 13.5
points per game, sophomore guard
Phil Hart 12 points and senior guard
Kenny Sumblin 10.5.
Capel said Monday that three
Broncos no longer are on the team.
John McFadden, a starter who was
averaging 11 points a game, is aca
demically ineligible, Capel said.
Starter Rahman Karim was dropped
from the team and reserve Rodney
Davis decided not to play because of
personal reasons.
"This is like a second life to us,"
Capel said, alluding to the CIAA
tournament, a 14-team field that
included defending NCAA Division
11 national champion N. C. Central
(21-3). "Stability is what Mark
(assistant coach Mark Cline) and I
want to bring to FSU. The last four
years have been tough on the players
and the student body." FSU has
known three coaches in that time.
In other CIAA tournament games
scheduled for today, Winston-Salem
State (14-11) faces Bowie State (2-
24) at 9 a.m. Elizabeth City State
(5-21) meets Shaw (18-8) at 11, fol
lowed by the FSU Hampton game.
Livingstone (1-25) plays Norfolk
State (22-3) at 3, Johnson C. Smith
(15-11) meets St. Paul's (14-13) at 7
and St. Augustine's (8-14) faces
Virginia State (12-14) at 9.
N. C. Central and Virginia Union
(26-1) received first-round byes.
Quarterfinal play is scheduled for
Thursday, the semifinals Friday and
the championship on Saturday at 8
