AKA’S DONATE $250 TO
HOMELESS SHELTER
By Roger A. Harris
The FSU chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha sorority, inc. con
tinued their outstanding tra
dition of community service
by sponsoring a fundraiser to
benefit an area shelter for the
homeless. A "Fasting For The
Homeless" drive raised $250 to
support this effort. Though
the event was designed to
help raise community aware
ness of and involvement with
this Important concern, a lot
more was actually accom
plished. Chapter President,
senior sociology major
Bayyinnah McGregor, ex
plained that many of her “sis
ters" experienced a spiritual
awalening not only to the
plight of the homeless but
also to the importance of
their leadership, through in
volvement, to make a differ
ence.
And make a difference
they did. Rev. Bill Riggs, direc
tor of Winslow House, a local
shelter that provides food,
shelter, and clothing to
Fayetteville's needy, ex
plained that AKA’s $250 dona
tion couldn't have come at a
better time. "We have a $775
insurance bill due in March
that this donation will go to
wards paying, we are a non
profit organization and all of
our operational costs are paid
for by donations, we thank
cod for this blessing; we
thank the AKA’s for their con
cern and contribution."
AKA was the first chartered
female sorority at FSU with its
Inception in 1952. Bayyinnah
stated that she was very
proud to be a member of one
of the most dynamic, aggres
sive, and energetic organiza
tions on FSU. *we are sponsor
ing "Clamour Day Photo" ses
sions (Feb 21-22) at reduced
prices. Our percentage of the
profits will be donated to a
battered womens shelter, we
feel that it would be very ap
propriate to donate money
raised in the name of beauty
to address the beast that is
the plight of the battered
woman."
From greeting Incoming
freshmen to providing aid to
University News
the homeless to helping bat
tered women. Alpha Kappa Al
pha embodies the spirit of the
African-American woman:
love, strength, power, wis
dom, and concern, we ap
plaud your effort, support
your cause, and follow your
lead.
