WAS THE SEARCH FOR
FSU’S CHANCELLOR
THOROUGH?
by Roger A. Harris
Rumors of internal politics, hidden
agendas, and misplaced priorities cast
a heavy shadow over the placement of
FSU’s chancellor. Sources close to the
search committee stated that during the
Board of Trustees meeting, (Septem
ber 6, 1995) members went so far as
to label the process a “sham^,, These
assertions strictly contrast those of
Hector McEachem, President of FSU’s
Board of Trustees and Chairman of the
Search Committee, who offered con
gratulations to committee members for
a job well done. This circumstance
begs the question, “Which point of
view is most accurate?,. Insight can be
gained by looking at the pros, cons, and
realities.
THE PROS
Without a doubt, Mr. McEachem
is a manager and leader of the utmost
integrity, experience, and will. Would
he knowingly permit or allow hidden
agendas to impede tiie Search
Committee’s true puipose: to select
the most qualified person to lead FSU
into the twenty-first century? Para

new chancellor was the inteijection of
student, faculty, and community con
cerns to ensure that all affected could
not later cry foul. To this end the com
mittee must be commended for carry
ing out their duties efficiently, effec
tively, and in a timely maimer.
THE CONS
No selection process attempted by
committee is immune from internal
politics. The idea is to keep these poli
tics from corrupting the entire search
