Charles H. Mumford Sr.,
Class of ‘49
The FSU family thanks Mr. Charles H.
Mumford Sr., for conceiving and promoting the
idea of honoring the former head coach and
athletic director during the 1996 Homecoming
activities.
Charles H. Mumford Sr., was bom in Moore
County, North CaroUna. Charles graduated with
honors from Booker T. Washington High School
in Clarkton, North Carolina. He distinguished
himself in college at Fayetteville State University
and earned enough grade points by the end of his
second year to graduate with honors, earning
double majors .— elementary education and
physical education. He earned the master of science
degree from The University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, and completed post-graduate courses
at Duke and Temple Universities. He then enrolled
in and completed further studies in the doctoral
program at George Washington University,
Washington, D.C.
Among his many honors and accomplishments,
Charles has distinguished himself as a lecturer for
the University of North Carolina and George
Washington University; a basketball, baseball,
football and tennis coach; chairman of the finance-
budgeting planning committee of John Wesley
A.M.E. Zion Church; one of the first African-
Americans to be chief executive officer of a
community action agency in North Carolina;
supervisor of economic development corporations
in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida,
California, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands;
and the only African-American selected by Buick
Motor Division of General Motors Corporation to
serve as a member of a 12-person advisory panel
to Buick’s sales and marketing departments in the
Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area.
Charles is currentiy employed as an auditor/
evaluation specialist with the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C.
and is the “founding father” of the Descendants of
Tony and Millie Mumford Big “M” Corporation
— a legal corporation chartered to conduct business
throughout the continental United States.*
