COLLAPSING
DORMITORY
CEILING INJURES
STUDENT
by Roger A. Harris and Jason Arthur
In FSU’s Hood Hall on February 4,
at approximately 8:30 A. M., sopho
more English major and dormitory
Residence Assistant, Shelley Robinson,
suffered a head injury when the ceil
ing of her dormitory room collasped
upon her head. This incident has ironi
cally occured in the two year wake of
S6 million in dormitory renovations that
were designed to improve the then sub
standard living conditions of FSU on-
campus students. A stunned and dis
mayed Robinson, as well as other dor
mitory residents, now wonder if any
thing was really done and if anything
has really changed.
In early January, Robinson reported
a leak that was in her room to Florence
Mitchell, the Residence Supervisor for
Hood Hall. The complaint was for
warded to Residence Life, a depart
ment that is responsible for the man
agement of all campus dormitories. On
February 3, a second leak was reported
that was severe enough to force
Robinson to spend the evening with
fellow Residence Assistant and sopho
more English major, Donise Knight.
The following morning, Robinson re
turned to her room to prepare for
classes and was getting dressed when
the ceiling suddenly collapsed on her
head. Stunned by what had happened,
she called Knight. While Knight at
tended to Robinson, she directed an
other unnamed Residence Assistant to
notify Mitchell (who was off duty at
the time), but the call was never made.
Ms. Moore (Mitchell’s assistant) was
on duty that morning, but was out at
tending to a family emergency at the
time of the incident.
Robinson could not be persuaded to
go directly to the infirmary and instead
elected to attend her morning classes.
During lunch she became dizzy, fainted
in front of the campus dining hall, was
taken to the campus infirmary and was
subsequently diagnosed as suffering
from flu symptoms (it is not clear that
Robinson informed the infirmary that
she had been struck on the head).
After leaving the infirmary,
Robinson was taken to Highsmith
Rainy Hospital were she was diagnosed
as suffering from head injuries and
placed on two weeks bed rest.
The next day Robinson, Knight, and
a group of other concerned dormitory
residents met with Dr. Harry Ghee,
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs,
and Mr. Walter Patterson, Director of
Residence Life, to discuss the incident.
In a telephone interview, Ghee stated
that he tried to relieve the students’ dis
tress amid claims that he had no con
cern for their well being. Negative com
ments and responses from students
after the meeting indicated that his ef
forts were less than successful.

Wachovia Bank Awards $50,000 for FSU’s
Chancellor’s Scholars Program
Fayetteville, NC, February 9, 1998 —
Wachovia has awarded $50,000 to
Fayetteville State University in support
of the Chancellor’s Scholars program,
which provides scholarships to aca
demically talented students who are
involved in their communities.
“Scholarships funding is our most
critical need at FSU,” commented
Chancellor Willis B. McLeod about the
Wachovia gift. “Contributions such as
Wachovia’s help us to support our 250
Chancellor’s Scholars in their pursuit
of a college education, and to encour
age them to develop a lifelong com
mitment to serving the communities in
which they live.”
FSU Chancellor’s Scholars receive
substantial four-year scholarships.
Chancellor’s Scholars must maintain
academic excellence in their studies,
and they perform six to eight hours of
community service as tutors and men
tors for children in the public schools
and church tutorial programs, and as
sist nonprofit organizations with volun
teer work. The Chancellor’s Scholars
program is fianded with donations from
corporations, foundations, and individu
als.
C. Keith Love, Senior Vice Presi
dent of Wachovia Bank for the
Sandhills, and Joy Paige, Vice Presi
dent of Wachovia Bank in Raleigh, pre
sented the contribution to Dr. McLeod
during a recent Bronco basketball
game. Mr. Love said that the
Chancellor’s Scholarship program al
lows Wachovia “to assist very deserv
ing young people in a very direct way.
He went on to say that “the recipi
ents of these scholarships are proven
high academic achievers, proven lead
ers of their peers, and maybe most
importantly, proven servants to their
communities....this contribution allows
Wachovia to expand its partnership
with FSU’s ongoing mission of excel
lence in education.”
