Photos by: Ashley Smith Lady Broncos Beat CIAA Powerhouse By: Ashley Smith The Voice In an extremely close game, the Lady Broncos basketball team rose to defeat CIAA powerhouse Shaw University on November 21, 85-81. Junior Tenisha McArthur led Fayetteville State on the road to victory. With 21 points during the game, McArthur dominated Fayetteville State's possessions with 11 rebounds and hitting 5 of 6 free throws. Other players for the Broncos also helped to shape the game's outcome. Passion Phillips, a junior from Charlotte, had the second highest points on the team with 14, and Chelsea Jeter, a sophomore and a CIAA All-Conference Pre-season team pick, had 12 points. Jocabia Lucas also hod an impressive game, hitting 9 of 13 from the free throw line. The game held a large amount of symbolic value as well. The Shaw Bears have won the Women's CIAA championship the last four years. Until the bout with the Broncos, Shaw hod been unbeaten by CIAA opponents in 77 games. The Broncos had not won against Shaw since 1998, with this past week's game ending a six-game losing streak against the Bears. The game stayed evenly matched throughout the night, with Shaw maintaining a close lead over the Broncos throughout the first half. As the half ended, with Shaw up 40-38, Fayetteville State knew they had to come out of the locker room pumped during the second half. The Broncos came out fighting with rebounds and points by McArthur and Jeter, as well as help from other Lady Broncos like sophomore Jarama McMillion and Jocabia Lucas, who shot a series of free throws during the half. The teams were neck and neck throughout the entire half, making baskets back and fourth as one team tried to pull away from the other. As the final seconds of the clock trimmed down the Broncos managed to pull just out of Shaw's reach and went on to win the game by four points. Shaw out-shot the Broncos in the paint, which gave them an edge during the game. However, the Broncos managed to pull more points off of turnovers and hod 12 more bench points (points scored by non starters) than the Bears. Fayetteville State's ability to get the ball around to a variety of players kept the Bears on their toes, and never gave them the opportunity to set up an adequate defense. The Lady Broncos are off to a good start after knocking Shaw off of their powerhouse pedestal. With a slew of conference games coming up over the next month it will be interesting to see how the Broncos hold up under pressure. Do we smell a CIAA Championship?
