Center promotes
physical fitness

Wayrie Conununity
College (WCC) now has
its first total body
Fitness Center (FC)
located in MSS 207.
Consisting of a 900-
square foot fitness
room, two 30'x 30*
multi-purpose rooms,
and men's and womfen's
locker rooms, the new
FC offers fitness
opportunities to
students, staff, and
faculty.
Michael Saylors,
Chair of the Social
Science Department and
health and physical
education instructor,
said, "We can offer
physical education
classes for transfer
students majoring in
physical education and
also provide times for
use by the whole WCC
family."
The Student
Government Association
(SGA) provided $7000
from student activity
fees and the WCC
Foundation $8500 to
equip the center.
Experienced in the
use of all the machines
in the PC, D. J. Coles,
SGA president and work
study student, provides
instruction for those
interested in working
out.
Patrons using the
Power Station 4000 (PS
4000) machine and
weights work to build
muscular strength and
endurance, and those
using the 2 Climb Max
150 stairclimbers and 4
WynMor Air Dyne sta
tionary bikes try to
increase aerobic
capacity.
The stairclimbers
contain 9 computerized
programs at 9 different
intensity leveils.
The PS 4000, a 6-
station weight training
apparatus purchased
from Sportsman's World
in Goldsboro, includes:
Chest Press -
chest/triceps^
Pec Pull - chest
Lat Pull - back and
shoulder
Row/Curls - arms
Knee extension -
quadraceps
Leg curl - ham
strings

President; Jerry
Kornegay, Director of
Student Activities and
Recruiting; Dr. Ned
Sauls, Chair of College
Council and instructor
in the Human Services
Department; and Carolyn
Walston, Continuing
Education.
Saylors said patrons
using the FC receive a
handout of mandatory
rules and safety
precautions to follow
while using the
equipment; they will
also need to provide
proof of insurance.
Saylors said
immediate needs include
shirts, equipment such
as aerobic steps and
dumbbells, and
additional staff to
oversee the operation.
The FC is available
on Mondays, Tuesdays,
Thursdays, and Fridays
from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m.
