PHOTO: Liz Neador Visiting artist produces 'Spoon River Anthology' By MICHAEL PARKS In the fall quarter’ on December 10, Cynthia Mitchell, Visiting Artist for both Wayne and James Sprunt Community Colleges, held auditions for the play "Spoon River Anthology" to be presented in February and March at both JSCC and WCC. Originally a book- length series of poems by Edgar Lee Masters published in 1915, Charles Aidman conceived, adapted, and arranged the dramatic version Mitchell chose. Twenty-one potential actors--faculty, staff, and students--showed up to try out for parts. Faculty, staff, and students from both colleges will join forces for the production held first at James Sprunt on Thursday, February 18 at 1:00 p.m. and Friday, February 19 at 8:00 p.m. in Monk Auditorium. The performances at WCC will occur on Thursday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m. and Friday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. The first rehearsal was held January 26. WCC faculty members and the parts they play include Dr. Ron Taylor, Director of the Health and Science Division as Tom Beatty and Enoch Dunlap; Ray Brannon, sociology instructor, as George Gray and Benjamin Pantier and Rosalyn Lomax, English instructor, as Hannah Armstrong and Mrs. Wi11iams. Members from the community with parts are Flo and David Vail, active in Center Stage Theater productions. WCC students involved in the play include Scott Hill, stage manager; Cynthia Poe, Cathy Carroll, and Crystal Wade, Tim Warrick, Cindy Jean Cordle, and Chad Smith. Admission to the play is free, and some area high school students will be guests in March for the matinee, according to Jo Ann Bruce, Executive Director of the WCC Foundation. Globeworks performs for 400 By KAREN CREECH The North Carolina Shakespere Festival in cooperation with the Wayne Community College Foundation presented a program at WCC'S Lecture Hall on January 4, 1993. ■ Jo Ann Bruce, Foundation Executive Director, said that mor^ than 350 students from neighboring high schools joined WCC's students, staff, and faculty in being entertained by the troupe. The actors, David Glenn Stern, Gretchen Kerner, and Kevin R. Free gave a medley of songs and recitations from several familiar Shakespere plays. Selections included a song from "As You Like It" and a ballad from "Twelfth Night." Kerner and Free entertained with vocals and Stern played the flute. The troupe performed excerpts from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" "Romeo and Juliet," Hamlet," and "MacBeth." Stern, born into a theatrical family and formally trained in Michigan, studied to be a director in the theater. Stern's experience has also included working in downtown theaters in New York, and in a popular Asian form of drama called Kabuki. Gretchen Kerner formally trained in London England, at a drama school with Bobby Lewis. She also had vocal training in ‘New York. Kevin Free was educated at Duke University in political science, with a certificate in Women's Studies. Free was the newest member of Globeworks having begun with the troupe on January 5, 1993.
