Jail-a-thon nets dollars, fun
By LELAND WALTERS
On December 17,
1996, from 8 a.m. to 5
p.m., the Student
Government Association
held the first ever
Jail-A-Thon in the
Atrium of the Learning
Center Building.
SGA Vice President
John Moses and
Secretary Julie Heath
suggested the project
and arranged with the
American Cancer Society
to borrow a mock prison
cell, which they set up
with bailiffs and a
cellular phone for
soliciting bails.
SGA representatives
Ricky Dills and Doug
White served as sheriff
and deputy,
respectively, making
all the arrests .
Some faculty members
got put into prison by
groups of their
students ad others.
History instructor
Tracy Edmundson was
relieved to see her
husband, Mitch, ready
to bail her out early
in the day with a check
for $ 108.
WCC President Dr. Ed
Wilson ended up calling
his bank to charge his
way out of prison.
SGA representatives
took mug shots of those
arrested and gave them
a cellular phone to
solicit bail money
which had to be double
the arresting fee.
The minimum cost to
arrest someone was $5,
but some people raised
outstanding amounts to
keep people in jail.
A person could be
arrested only once and
the maximum time served
was 2 hours.
Beth Jones said, "I
was very pleased with
the outcome. The
students and staff
seemed to enjoy it."
The highest amount
raised was for Elboni
Bennett at $292 bail.
Close to 85 arrests
were made, earning a
total of $1520.00.
The SGA allocated
the proceeds to the
Battered Women's
Sheltel!-, the Soup
Kitchen at St .
Stephen's Episcopal
Church, the WCC
Foundation, and the
Foundation Emergency
Funds.
Instructor Mike Saylors
Instructor Bob Krieger roised
a large bail.
