Wilcenski said that
consumers have the
choice of being "either
fat or crazy.”
She feels that the
mentally ill must be
allowed to make their
own mistakes; otherwise
they are not allowed to
be successful.
Wilcenski stated
that of the 4 times she
was in Cherry Hospital
she was abused on 3
occas ions.
Wilcenski now sits
on the Governor's Board
of Advocacy Directors.
Also at the meeting
was Vicki Field, a
support group coor
dinator and consumer
client for the Division
of Vocational
Rehabilitation (DVR).
Field said, "My main
job is to keep people
out of the hospital."
She said one of the
main purposes of her
job was to "give hope
in a hopeless
situation."
At the end of the
meeting, Wilcenski
shared a poem, and then
refreshments were
served.
Discussion about
starting a group for
clients followed the
meeting.
The meeting opened
the eyes of friends and
family members of the
mentally ill as to what
these patients were
going through.

Thursday of every month
in the LC building in

Hackley tenders resignation
At l.he request, of
the governor. President
Hackley led a special
task force which
enlisted the help of
community colleges in
an effort to prepare
more minority teachers
for public schools.
The board commended
Hackley for his total
commitment to North
Carolina's continuum of
educa t ion.

President of the North
Carolina Community
College system since
January 1995, has
announced his
resignation effective
Juno 30, 1997.
Hackley said, "I
look forward to
continuing with each of
you during the
transition period."
Hackley referred to
the transition from
quarters to semesters
to be effective system-
wide starting summer
1997, a change which he
spearheaded.
