PIE needs student volunteers

The first Wayne
Community College
President Award for
Distinguished Service
has been awarded to
Dillon S. Wooten, CEO
of Wooten Oil Company.
Dr. Wilson,
president of WCC,
wanted to honor those
who have made outstand
ing contributions to
the college.
After brainstorming
and gathering ideas
from others, Wilson
selected Wooten for the
prestigious award for
Wooten's sponsorship of
a golf tournament to
raise finds for the
Foundation of WCC.
Wooten sponsors the
Kwik Mart/Wayne
Community College Golf
Tournament every June
to raise proceeds for
student scholarships.

He said exposure to
violence, such as
depicted in gangsta rap
music, weakens
inhibitions, weakens
sensibility, and gives
people ideas about how
to hurt others.
He said, "Some rap
music portrays blacks
who go to school as
' nerds ' or 'Uncle
Toms.' This causes
black students to catch
hell from other
blacks."
He said that rap
artists do not fall
into main stream
America and that some
of rap's negative
images affect people on
the subconscious level .
The tournaments have
raised $83,000 in the
past 4 years.
Wooten graduated
from UNC-Chapel Hill
with a master's degree
in business
administration.
Wooten chose to
support WCC because of
local community
interest and because
the money raised goes
directly to benefit
students through
scholarships, not to
administrative and
hidden costs.
Wooten said,
"[Receiving the award]
was very unexpected, ^
but I am very honored
to be chosen."

He gave the example
that in rap black men
are called "niggers"
and black women
"bitches" or "whores"
and that children
. imitate these
attitudes.
At a question and
answer period following
the presentation,
students brought up
several points, such as
the motivation behind
selling gangsta rap and
the movement away from
gangsta rap on the part
of rap artists .

WCC has had a
Partners in Education
program in which
instructors visit area
high schools and team-
teach or perform other
activities .
Last year WCC’s SGA
initiated a student
component of this
program (PIE) and needs
more student
volunteers, according
to Janice Hill,
counselor at WCC.
Currently only 10
volunteers travel to
Goldsboro Middle School
every Thursday from
3:45 to 4:45 to tutor
students in reading and
mathemat i cs.
The PIE program is
planning a spring tour
on campus for the
tutored students from
Goldsboro Middle
S choo1.
The tour is to
encourage the students
to excel in school at
an early age to create
a solid foundation in
preparation for
college.
The PIE volunteers
are planning a party at
the end of the year to
congratulate the
students on their hard
work.
