Foundation meets many college needs
By AMY RINEHART
The Foundation of
Wayne Community
College, Inc. is a
nonprofit corporation
organized under the
laws of North Carolina.
Its purpose and
mission are to broaden
the base of community
support and to promote
the educational
development of WCC,
according to JoAnn
Bruce, Executive
Director.
The Foundation hopes
to achieve this goal
through the asking of
private gifts, of money
and property
investment, management
and disbursement of
such assets to enhance
the educational
programs and services
offered by the college.
The Foundation seeks
to meet the college
needs in the following
ways :
It has built the
Endowment Fund for the
general support of the
college.
Each year, 10% of
the unrestricted funds
received by the
Foundation are
designated for this
fund.
The Fund totals
$444,637, and it
provides a lasting
source of financial aid
for WCC students.
The Foundation
provides financial aid
to qualified students
in the form of grants
or loans.
In September of
1996, the Foundation
awarded over $88,000 in
scholarships for WCC
s tudent s.
Every September, a
reception is held to
honor recipients and to
thank the donors for
their gifts.
The Foundation also
honors WCC Ambassador
students with a $500
scholarship and
official college
attire .
The Foundation
recognizes outstanding
performance by faculty
and staff.
It annually awards 3
recipients the Employee
of the Year Award.
The awards of $500
each are given to the
recipient from the
Operational and
Maintenance Staff,
Professional Staff, and
Professional Support
Staff .
A special gift of
$30,000, given by an
anonymous donor in
honor of George E.
Wilson, established the
Excellence in Teaching
Award.
A special gift made
possible through the
efforts of the North
Carolina legislators of
Wayne County added
additional funds for
the honorable award.
Each year at WCC's
Commencement, an
outstanding faculty
member is recognized
for excellence in
teaching.
The recipient of the
award receives a gift
of $1500 and the
opportunity to attend
the International
Conference on Teaching
Excellence.
Last May, Waiston
Lee, a biology
instructor, received
this award.
The Foundation
assists the college in
purchasing special
equipment and supplies
for use in its
programs.
Mini-grants of $500
each are awarded
annually to the faculty
and staff of WCC.
They are requests
given in responsse to
faculty and staff for
needs to enhance
educational awareness
and opportunities at
WCC.
Also, the Foundation
and others helped start
the Wayne Information
Network (WIN) which
links WCC and all Wayne
County Public Schools
to the 1ibraries-on-
line network.
A program called
"First Search" allows
Wayne County Public
School students and WCC
students to communicate
with other students
across the world.
The Foundation has a
Web Page for
information about the
college and all its
activities.
To keep up with the
WCC Alumni, the
Foundation made it
possible in the Web
Site for all alumni to
keep in touch with
other alumni and WCC.
The address is:
http://www.wayne.cc.nc.
us .
The Foundation
sponsors special events
to provide students and
the community the
opportunity to enjoy
plays, concerts,
speakers, compete for
math awards, learn of
opportunities for
careers, and learn the
diversity of our
nation.
The Foundation co
sponsors events with
the Community Arts
Council, Friends of
Wayne County Public
Library, Mt. Olive
College, Seymour
Johnson A.F.B., and
Wayne County Public
Schools, just to name a
few.
Dramatic events,
produced by the
faculty, staff, and
students of WCC, are
presented each year and
are free of charge.
The Foundation
enlists community
support for the college
with an annual campus
and community fund
drive in October of
each year.
It has raised over
$1,000,000 since the
first annual fund drive
in 1988.
The goal for 1996-
1997 is $155,000 and to
date the Foundation has
received $130,000.
These gifts may be
received throughout the
year.
The Foundation has a
Planned Giving Program.
It informs the general
public of the
opportunity to
bequeath, either now or
later, by will, trust,
or other means, assets
and/or cash to the
Foundation for the
benefit of WCC
Student s.
On June 24 and June
25, 1997, the Fifth
Annual Kwik Mart/Wayne
Community College Golf
Tournament will be held
at Lane Tree Golf Club..
It is sponsored by
Wooten Oil Company and
has raised over $83,000
s ince 1993.
Each tournament has
been a great success,
thanks to the
commitment of the
president, S. Dillon
Wooten, and his
dedicated employees.
The proceeds provide
scholarship funds for
WCC students.
Last years
tournament provided
$27,000 for student
scholarships.
WCC has agreed to
form a partnership with
Duke University for the
Nonprofit Management
Certificate Program.
This program is
funded by the Kellogg
Foundation.
