Plans advance for 40-year celebration
By AMY RINEHART
On December 11,
1996, Bill Bennett,
wee's Public
Information Officer,
met with faculty and
staff to plan for the
upcoming 40th anniver~
sary celebration of
Wayne Community
College.
Others attending the
meeting were Donna
Potter, Irma Wiggins,
Phyllis Patterson, Ed
Kelly, Dorothy Howland,
Malcolm Shearin, and
Annette Hawkins.
He opened the
meeting by welcoming
everyone and giving
information on the
background of WCC.
He reviewed the
college’s history from
1957, when it was Wayne
Technical College, to
the present.
He said that the
plan is to kick off the
celebration at the
start of the 1997--1998
school year.
The purpose of the
celebration is to make
the community aware of
the college, its
importance in the
community, and the way
it has grown.
Bennett also handed
out a list of members
who have specific roles
in the planning and
setting up of different
activities, promotions,
and other aspects
needed for the 40-year
celebration to go
smoothly.
Faculty and staff who met to assist in planning the 40-year celebration included (I to r)
Irma Wiggins, Co-op and College Transfer counselor; Donna Potter (behind Wiggins),
Librarian Assistant; Malcolm Shearin, Director of the Media Production Department;
Annette Hawkins, instructor. Math Department; Ed Kelly, Director of Co-op and Job Place
ment; Dorothy Howland, instructor in the Nursing Department; and Phyllis Patterson,
instructor. Math Department. PHOTO: AMY RINEHART
Bennett had
suggestions for the
placement of
advertising; phone
book, bulletin boards,
and school
publi cations.
Bennett felt that a
new slogan and logo
were needed.
He provided a few
slogan samples and
emphasized the need for
a decision as soon as
possible.
The members of the
meeting voted for a
special logo and a
special slogan contest.
The Slogan and Logo
Contest was held
January 13th through
February 3rd.
For promotion, many
members suggested
bas eba11 hats,
sweatshirts, T-shirts,
cups, and other items
with the new birthday
logo on it.
The group discussed
having alumni, VIPs,
and O’thers to tour and
speak during the event.
The group mentioned
getting the media
involved in the
activities .
Bennett then opened
;the floor to ideas on
activities for the
celebration.
Ed Kelly expressed a
desire for a sock hop
and antique car
display.
What the college can
do will depend on the
approved budget, he
said.
The celebration is
not going to be a one
time event, Bennett
said.
It will continue
throughout the year so
that it remains in the
public mind.
Sanford WCC*s doctor
for 27 years
By AMY RINEHART
During the cold and
flu season, it's nice
to have a doctor who
makes "house" calls.
Since 1970 Dr.
Virginia Sanford
has come to WCC to see
students and treat
their minor ailments
every Wednesday from
11:00 to 12:00 in the
SGA office .
This service is
provided for students
by the SGA, which pays
Dr. Sanford's fee from
the school activity fee
students pay every
quarter.
Dr. Sanford settled
in Goldsboro in 1969
and opened a family
practice clinic at 811
Simmons Street.
She graduated from
Duke University.
She also serves on
the staff at Wayne
Memorial Hospital.
Beth Jones, SGA
adviser, said that even
with all Sanford's
responsibilities, she
never fails to give her
patients total care
with a concerned
bedside manner.
Sanford's family
includes her husband.
Dr. Vernon P. Mangum;
son, Jamie; daughter,
Sarah Rose; and
grandson, Austin.
Her hobbies and
interests are acting on
stage, oil painting,
reading, and spending
time with her family.
Sanford has some
advice for students:
"Work hard, study, set
a goal, and do your
best to reach it."
