Brinson wears
Miss WCC crown

And the new Miss
Wayne Community College
for 1997 is. . . Maria
Brinson!
Reggie Swinson,
serving as emcee for
the contest, announced
the new titleholder on
Saturday, April 5,
1997, at the Miss WCC
Pageant held at 7:00
p.m. in the Lecture
Hall .
Seven female WCC
students participated
in the event: Elbony
Bennett, Maria Brinson,
Holly Colie, Shelboni
Daye, Belinda Haw
thorne, Lita Thomas,
and Trade Sinquefield.
Brinson also won the
Talent Competition with
her rendition of, "Can
You Reach My Friend?"
Brinson, a second-
year college transfer
student, is an
elementary education
major.
She remarked,
"Teachers are among the
people whom I admire
most, and as a teacher
in training, I hope
someday to be a teacher
who will be admired by
my students."
Sinquefield won
first runner-up and the
interview trophy,
Daye was second
runner-up, and Lita
Thomas won Miss
Congeniality.
The opening act had
the contestants reading
The Campus Voice as the
curtain opened.
Then, to the music
"I’m Every Woman" they
introduced themselves
and took their first
walk on stage.
The categories for
the competitions
included sportswear,
careerwear, talent,
interview, and evening
gown.
Student Activities
Coordinator, Beth Jones
directed the pageant
assisted by SGA
Secretary, Julie Heath.
Pageant Committee
Chair was Lynda Carges.
The judges included
Carolyn Carter of
Raleigh (UNC), Patty
Daughtry-Gray (Miss WCC
1993), and Denise
Sewell of Goldsbora
(local businesswoman).
Kenneth Neal,
Division Head,
Business/Computer
Technology, served as
Auditor.
Sonja Smith-Ginn,
2nd Runner-up in the
1995 Miss WCC Pageant,
sang the theme song
"Take My Breath Away."
Other entertainment
for the evening
included the Reverend
Jerry Dortch (who also
accompanied 2 of the
j;ontestants), Kimberly
Artis, Pamela Sewell,
and Heather Dills.
Jones said, noting
that lack of interest
last year cancelled
plans for a pageant,
"This year it was a
huge success, thanks to
the hard work of Julie
Heath and other SGA
officers."
