2 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - APRIL 25. 2001 Because you asked... Dr. ^Wilson shows Joy Ginn the Emil Rosenthal award he received for his leadership role with United Way of Wayne County. By KRISTIN A COTTLE Voice: Now that the Bond Issue has passed, how will the 13.6 million dollars be used? When will the students begin to see the fruits of this large amount of money? Is there an order of priority or a blueprint of the plans for this money? Wilson: Good questions. Out of that 1.3 million is repair and renovation money. With that money we are going to replace the roof in the Health Science building and also expand the dental lab. We will be purchasing some new chairs for the dental hygiene lab. Then there are 2 or 3 projects that we are waiting on right now so that we can find out what they are going to cost us. Then there are going to be some buildings built. The problem with this is that none of this is going to be seen for a while, because we get only a certain percentage of the money each year over a 6- year period. One of the first projects is to build a childcare center on campus. Voice: Some students are concerned that there aren’t any public phones on the left half of campus though several phones are available in the main building and one on the bottom floor of the Holly Building. Why aren’t there any on the other half of the campus? Former employee returns as new vice president By KRISTIN A. COTTLE For Ken Ritt, WCC is familiar ground. He worked from 1991- 1993 in the Project Enable program as Human Resources Coordinator. Then he was Director of Administrative and Fiscal Services at James Sprunt CC in Kenansville. Later Ritt went to a position at Lenoir Community College as business manager. In January he joined the staff at WCC as Vice President for Educational Support Systems. “I read about the opening on the North Carolina Community College Network, and coming back to WCC was something that I have always wanted to do. It was important to me to be back in Wayne County.” He said the most pressing projects he will bexoncemed with are the $11 million in construction projects, beginning with the new child care center; the conversion to new information systems; and managing day-today operations given the state budget shortage. Wilson: Well, we have a real problem because the state of North Carolina controls the public phones, and the problem with public phones is you are not going to see very many of them around because people have cell phones. I will look into that and see what I can do. I am not very optimistic that are going to be able to provide phones around the area as everyone would like. Voice: Many students believe that more parking is needed to keep spaces from filling so quickly.- Are there any plans of expanding students’ parking in the future? Wilson: We hope to be able to expand that parking. That is a part of the bond issue. All of this is going to depend upon how much space remains after we design the new facilities. Yes, we would like to add some more new spaces, but it is just a matter of resources right now. Voice: There is exciting news buzzing all over campus because Kwai Chun Chan is one of USA Today’s Academic All American team members. How do you think this will affect Wayne Community? Wilson: I think that is will do several things. It is obviously a source of positive publicity for the institution. And it will show that our students are recognized nationally as being outstanding students. It is a very positive thing for the institution and shows that we have a good faculty. That will help the faculty and show that the students are getting the kind of education that they need if they are going to transfer or if they are going go on to work. Voice: There has been a lot of faculty retiring in the past few months. How many more years do you plan to stay with Wayne Community College? Wilson: I don’t know. That is a very good question. I think about that some. I could have retired 3 years ago. I still enjoy what I am doing here at WCC. There are a lot of projects around here that I am interesting in seeing through. My wife also said that she didn’t want me around the house. Voice: Do you have anything your would like to say to the students of WCC? Wilson: Take advantage of the opportunities while you are here. Also if you have a difficulty or a problem, we have tutors and advisers who can help. There are services here that are for the students’ needs. My door is always open. You are welcome to come see me if you need to. Just remember if you have a problem, there are people to talk to that want to help. Dr. Wilson welcomes Ken Ritt to WCC as the replacement for retired vice president Linwood Anderson.
