PHO rO COURTESY OF JACE MTERS By TRUDI THOMAS and LISA LEE During fall break Jace Myers, a WCC student in the Turf Grass Management Program, accepted a position as a spray technician with the Pelican Hill Golf Club in California. Myers interviewed for the position with Steve Thomas, Director of Agronomy at the Club located 1 hour south of Los Angeles. Myers said, "It is a highly maintained public/resort golf club comparable to Pinehurst or Pebble Beach and the cost of playing golf is approximately $250 a round." He said, “I will earn $13 per hour in addition to overtime ($27,000-$32,000 yearly), full health benefits, and a clothing allowance for uniforms.” Myers, 23, a native of Cornelius, NC, already had a B.S. in marketing from UNC-Wilmington when he decided to combine 2 degrees by attending WCC's turf grass program under the direction of John Mills, instructor. One of the program's requirements is a co-op assignment, which Myers fulfilled at Golf Course #8 in Pinehurst, NC, with Jeff Hill as his supervisor. Myers had worked at a golf course during the summers while he was enrolled at UNC- Wilmington. He met interns from other colleges and countries. He said, “The summer co op experience as opened doors that may have remained closed to me." Based upon Hill's recommendation after Myer's superior performance as a co-op student, Myers was nominated for the WCC Co-op Student of the Vear award for 2002-2003, according to Anne Millington, associate director of cooperative education and job referral. "He had the best evaluation I have ever seen," she said. "He is hard-working student who has the potential to go far in his chosen field.". Myers has also received the Turf Grass Council of North Carolina Scholarship worth $700, only 5 of which it awarded this year. Dr. David Griffith gestures during his lecture on the European Union. PHOTO: HEATHER GURLEY Lecturer discusses effects of European Union By HEATHER GURLEY and MITCHELL PHILLIPS On October 30, 2002, Wayne Community College hosted Dr. David Griffith, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who discussed the formation of the European Union and the new European currency, the Euro. The college, as well as a few area high schools, sponsored the discussion as part of the World View Lecture Series. Dr. Griffith explained the early attempts by European countries to form a union.
