As Danny Worley enters the
building where the automotive
program is based, he is greeted
warmly.
He may have been away for
awhile, but people remember
him and what he contributed
during his years as a faculty
member and department head at
Wayne Community College.
The automotive program first
drew him as a student. It was
the early 1960s, and WCC
was called Wayne Industrial
Education Center.
Mr. Worley saw enrolling
in the program as a move that
would help him professionally.
After graduating in 1962, he
went to work as a technician
at the B&R Ford dealership in
Smithfield.
About four years later, his
former instructor called and
asked if he would be interested
in teaching two night classes.
Mr. Worley said yes and, a
year later when a full-time job
opened, he said yes again.
It was the beginning of a

many accomplishments. Among
them were scheduling annual
field trips to car plants across
the country and setting up a
program for the college with
General Motors.
Now retired from WCC, Mr.
Worley continues to teach,
this time at Wake Technical
He says he appreciates the time
he spent at Wayne Community
College.
“The college meant a great
deal to me,” he says.
“It was the foundation of
my education. From student to
department head, it’s been a life-
building experience.”
