New degree Continued from 1 the short time between the end of the spring 2007 semester and the begirming of the fall 2007 semester, Wayne Community College established a video game design program at the college. “The video game design program is an asset to the college because it coalesces with other technology programs already offered at the college, and can help students in those other programs further their degrees just a little more,'’ said Mr. Everett, computer technology instructor at Wayne Community College. “The program consists of game design, graphic design, image manipulation, audio manipulation, and numerous other concepts that are of use to various technological careers.” Students can take some of the individual classes associated with video game design without settling on game design as a career. For example, if students only want to learn how to manipulate images or create audio files, they can do that, as long as they meet the prerequisites. “It is recommended that all video game design students join Phi Beta Lambda,” Mr. Everett said. “This is good for the students because Phi Beta Lambda will teach them how to create, amend, produce, campaign and market a product.” Many accommodations have been made to meet the needs of the new program. One is the purchasing of new software and licensing specifically for video game design. Another accommodation is the proposed hiring of a former Electronic Arts employee whose name is currently withheld. The new staff member’s first semester is scheduled for Spring 2008. At the 3rd Annual Carolina Games Summit, which will be held at Wayne Community College during the spring 2008 semester, students of the video game design program will be exhibiting some of their creations.
