Obama wins campus poll By TRENT HARRELL and JOHN LOFTON Staff Writers Barack Obama won the Wayne Community College Campus Voice presidential poll Friday, Feb. 8, with 91 votes. The Campus Voice held its presidential election poll from 9 until 11 a.m., with a table set up in the Wayne Learning Center atrium and students traveling across campus to poll students, staff and faculty. Over the course of two hours, 284 votes were collected. The polling results were similar to what is being seen nationally. Following is the number of votes each candidate received: Barack Obama (Deihocrat) ."-91 Hillary Clinton (Democrat) 77 John McCain (Republican) 64 Mike Huckabee (Republican) 39 Ron Paul (Republican) 12 Mitt Romney (Republican) 1 Dr. Kay Hall Albertson was installed as the fifth president of Wayne Community College on Thursday, Jan. 31. Tommy Cox, chair of the college’s board of trustees, presented her with the seal of the institution before a capacity crowd of college faculty and staff, community leaders and fellow officials from other community colleges. “I charge her with a tremendous burden and I do so with confidence that her shoulders can bear this weight, that she Has proven herself worthy and that we have chosen well,” Mr. Cox said as he placed the medallion baring the seal around her neck. In her address. Dr. Albertson promised to “not only be grateful for all that has been done before me and all that will be done with me and beside me, but also will insure that an equal legacy is left for those who will come next. Student Josh Artis performed Continued on 5 WCC to have honors program in the fall By TRENT HARRELL Staff Writer For the first time in its 51- year history, WCC will have an honors program. It is being assembled by Tara Bass and her colleagues here on campus, and will be offered in Fall 2008. “This program offers a challenging educational atmosphere for students who want to get more out of their education,” Mrs. Bass says. “The honors program is for students who have completed 12 credit hours and who have earned at least a 3.5 GPA. It offers them a course and a certificate of completion and is an achievement that can be noted on student transcripts, resumes, etc. It includes opportunities for service-learning, leadership training, and extended studies,” she says. Becoming an Honors student is an opportunity to take learning to the next level. Students will experience more personalized learning geared toward exploration and critical thinldng.
