Learning auto body repair - then and now Murphy Williams Sam Key By NAN WILLIAMS Staff Writer Murphy Williams of Albertson began his career in auto body repair 45 years ago. He had no formal schooling, and has been successful. Mr. Williams started his career right out of high school. There was no course in college for this type of work, he says. The beginning of his career started when he worked with his cousin at an auto body repair shop. He learned from watching others and hands-on experience. This type of work posed a challenge for him - and that is what he looked forward to, he says. From 1963 until 1969, he worked for several motor companies and then decided to open a business for himself so that he could make more money. During his career, Mr. Williams has seen many changes and says that one must keep up with the new technology. As an example, he uses the painting of vehicles. Today, the paint job must include applying clear coating, whereas in the past, it didn’t. Safety is an issue, too. There are airbags and restraint systems installed in newer vehicles. Another advancement is the use of computers to measure and repair vehicle frames and to estimate damage and do billing. By JESSICA Y. HILL Staff Writer If you walk though the automotive lab, your eyes would probably stop at Sam Key, a student who loves working on cars. She is not out place, no matter how many guys you see. However, Sam is the only woman ir^ the program. The guys even joke that she is the only one who can give them a women’s point of view. That kidding doesn’t bother Sam at all. She laughs, knowing that they consider her one of them. Sam L. Key is a 19-year-old woman who is attending Wayne Community College to learn how to work on automobiles. She grew interested in that field after listening to her friends tell her all they knew about cars. She followed her interest to Wayne Community College, where she is now in her second semester. She says that she enjoys working on cars so much that she landed a co-op job at Shelton Harley Davidson Inc. here in Goldsboro. But wait, isn’t Harley Davidson a motorcycle shop? Yes, but it offers valuable learning experience, and she finds that customers talk to her, not only about motorcycles, but cars as well. Sam’s goal is to work in a car dealership after getting her certificate at WCC. Until then, she is happily “one of the guys.” Dean’s list Continued from 2 Tanya K. Newberry, Jack W.
