VOL. 1, NO. 8 THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE Wilkesboro, North Carolina WCC rn FEB. 27, 1968 Student Center Faces Major Breakdown These three brave boys ventured under The House to check on the furnace. They say they fixed it but later, a new motor was in stalled. Last week the W.C.C. student center suffered a major break down. First of all, when the student center was being open ed on a very cold morning, it was soon noticed that the fur nace was not in operation. This by itself changed everyone’s mind from going inside. No one took the time to get in touch with the repair man un til later in the afternoon. In the meantime, a brave group of boys ventured inside, built a fire in the fireplace which is in the front room and closed the door to the rest of the house, not thinking that anything else would happen. A couple of com petent, brave boys thought that they would see what was wrong with the furnace. They report ed that they had thoroughly checked the furnace motor and thought they had it fixed, but later a new motor was installed. This adventure took all morn ing. It seems that Jim Lyall, S.G.A. president, who is in charge of the student center could not be found and was not seen all day. Everyone was enjoying the warmth of the fireplace while toasting marshmallows when all of a sudden, someone heard a noise in one of the back rooms. The noise was coming from the room in which all of the vend ing machines are. It seems that due to the lack of heat the night before, the pipes burst. It took a while for some boys to find how to cut off the water to the machine. That machine was out of order for several days, thanks to no one calling Mache Vending Co. It was not very much longer until the pipes burst in the bathroom. By this time more people were around and every thing was in a state of con fusion. Everyone hunted for the main water cut off. After the water was cut off, everyone gathered in front of the fire place. Very shortly, Mr. Paul Hep- ler, the S.G.A.’s advisor came in and wanted to know what was going on. He quickly found out that everything was under control, no thanks to the proper authorities. He tells everyone to clean things up and then he left. If any member of the S.G.A. had happened to have been around that day, things wouldn’t have gotten so messed up. The S.G.A. should check on The House more often in case a repair is needed. They should be the ones to call the repair men. It has been proven that the responsibility of The House lies on their shoulders. Cl This scene took place in the bath room in the student center. Three pipes burst in there and the boys were trying to get the This is the mess Mr. Hepler was referring to. It was by this fire- pipes stopped up while everyone was looking for the water cut off. place that everyone kept warm during the furnace breakdown.
