SUPERLATIVES ARE ELECTED
Cougars Down Pythons
Mr. and Miss
Wilkes Community College Su
perlatives were elected last week
by means of a nomination-vote
type affair conducted in the Eng
lish and Humanities classes by
members of the Student Govern
ment Association. However this
round-about method of election
proved to be a sufficient means
to achieve a certain goal. Due
to the late date that the news
paper staff found out who the
superlatives were, there was, un
fortunately not enough time to
obtain pictures of these people.
According to the SGA the a-
mount of votes cast for each
person was so widespread and un-
believeably close that many of
the positions almost ended in a
tie.
Nevertheless, WCC Superla
tives were elected and are as
follows. Mr. WCC is Louis
Poteet, Miss WCC is Jackie
Priestly, Miss Cougar is Pansy
Lyalls, Miss Gwenda Joines was
chosen as a beauty from the
Technical Division, Regina
Owens is the reigning beauty
from The College Parallel Div
ision and Miss Louella Brown
shall represent the vocational
Division as their reigning beauty.
Quotation
•X Some people have
been heard to say that
the young man who can-
not laugh is a savage
and the old man who
will not laugh is a fool.
The Cougars experienced their
first taste of victory Saturday,
November 31st at 10:00 p.m. in
the North High Gym. A one point
lead proved to be enough in the
final minutes as an upset victory
was witnessed by several hundred
fans.
The Pythons of Winston-Salem
Business College were enjoying
a five-game winning streak and
in three of these five games they
had scored over one hundred
points. Then Linney’s legion dealt
them defeat. Have faith in your
team fans, this team may have
been down, but they are far from
being out. Support the Cougars,
after all, they are your team.
Unfortunately, there is not al
ways a right and wrong solution
to a situation. Sometimes there
are only two courses of action,
bad and worse.
New Campus:
Doubtful
Patience is the key word in
connection with the construction
and completion of the new Wilkes
Community College buildings.
Rumors have it that the campus
will not be completed; however,
a letter from the architect con
firms readiness by the winter
quarter. Construction engineers
have been working almost day
and night. Lighting and heating
installation as well as final paint
ing are under way. In addition
to basic utilities, there is equip
ment being moved into the
chemistry and physics labs.
The primary concern; how
ever, is not the building itself,
but the condition of the grounds.
The determining factor regard
ing the grounds has been the wet
weather experienced this fall.
The ground is too soft for the
pouring of curbs and walks, which
must be completed before the
bringing in of gravel for the park
ing lots. Without adequate parking
it will be impossible for classes
to meet. This same situation of
student parking has been especi
ally evident this quarter at the
classroom areas in both Wilkes
boro and North Wilkesboro.
Mr. Mayes reported a trying
experience at the new campus
last week when he had to shift
his Scout into four-wheel drive
and proceed through the “sea”
of mud.
At any rate, classes will meet
next quarter at Woodlawn or in
the new buildings. The teachers
and material will inevitably be
awaiting students.
An adult, uninterested in im
proving the opportunities of
youth, is not a credit to the so-
called human race.
