PAGE Z, THE COUGAR CRY, APRIL 21, 1969
EDITORIAL
April, 1969, brought to the community of the Wilkesboros
spring weather and a new three and one-half million dollar college
campus.
Wilkes Community College received its charter from the state
of North Carolina in 1965. The student body was very small, and
classes were held in old school buildings, local churches, and other
facilities. But in the past four years this handful of students has
grown to approximately eight himdred in number. These young
collegiates come from all parts of North Carolina and other states
and from all walks of life and facets of society. But in WCC
they all find a common bond —^ an intimate atmosphere in whidi
to pursue their individual preparations for life.
In the past these students felt something lacking in their
college life. This need was to have something concrete, some
thing they could see and touch and most of all, something to be
proud of. The new campus has provided this.
The student body is the most important single group on any
ooUege campus; they are the reason for the school. For the
student body to feel and act as a student body, they must asso
ciate with one another without the distraction of the general pub
lic. Again the new college facilities are an important step in
realizing this internal cohesion.
I feel that WCC has taken a major step forward in its goal to
serve the people of Wilkes County and the surrounding area as
an institution of higher learning. These people owe a lot to Dr.
Thompson for his ability in organization, planning, and fore
sight in creating a college of such scope and dimensions asi Wilkes
Community College has.

Not Me
Jones was sitting with his
wife behind a palm on a hotel
veranda late one night when a
young man and a girl came and
sat down on a bench near them.
Hidden behind the palm, Mrs.
Jones whispered to her husband:
“Oh, John, he doesn't know
we're here and he’s going to
propose. Whistle to warn him."
“What for?” said Jones.
“Nobody whistledto warnme."

Students, faculty, and all other
WCC personnel are asked not to
take paper cups, candy wrappers,
or other food containers out of
the Student Commons area. When
they end up in cigarette butt
receptacles in the buildings, they
make an unsightly mess which
distracts from the beautiful de
cor of the interiors of our new
facilities.
Students are asked to observe
these unwritten rules so that
“direct orders* do not have to
handed down from the college
administrators. IT IS YOUR
SCHOOL; KEEP IT CLEAN AND
BEAUTIFUL!

Anyone interested in learning
how to play the game of bridge
should contact Mr. Paul Hepler.
Mr. Hepler and other members of
the faculty are willing to devote
a couple of hours of their time
every day to teach interested
students the fundamentals of this
game. Knowing how to play bridge
will broaden your social life
especially if you intend to trans
fer to a four-year school.

A Letter To The
Editor
In the last edition of the Cougar
Cry, an unsigned letter was
printed that caused much talk on
the campus. I wrote this letter.
A lot of this talk was aimed at
the unsigned editorial as a whole
When I submitted this letter an-
nomously, it was for a reason.
Because of lack of contributions
to the paper, many of the letters
that appear in the Cougar Cry are
written by members of the staff
of the newspaper. These letters
are not only written to make
the student more aware of the
situations at our school but also
to widen the scope of the paper.
Last year I learned that many
of these letters, because they
were consistently written by the
same people, were unread, or the
people who contributed these
editorials were labeled as
“someone who only wanted to
gripe.”
I thought if the readers had the
idea that this letter was written
by a person outside of the news
paper staff, it would be better
received and carry more weight.
I was wrong and for this, I apolo
gize to you, the students and
other readers. I do not regret
writting the article. I do regret
that I used poor judgment in
not signing the letter.
I have one other regret. The
editorial was unsigned and as of
the present, it is unanswered.
The facts in that letter were
correct to the best of my know
ledge. No one has told me other
wise. No one has told me any
thing.

Eddie-Yes, mamma, I told
her she could choose between
the small apple or none at all,
and she chose the small one.
