Dr. Howard E, Thompson, Pre
sident of Wilkes Community Col
lege, was recently honored at a
dress ball held at the North
Wilkesboro Elks Club.
The ball, one of the events
of the Great State of Wilkes
Week, was attended by sponsors,
patrons, and benefactors of the
event as well as state digni
taries including Senator B.
Everett Jordan and former Gov
ernor of the State of North Caro
lina Dan K. Moore.
Speaking in the presentation
ceremony was D. V. Deal, Ex
ecutive Vice President of the
Northwestern Bank and honoring
Dr. Thompson with the presen
tation of a portrait of the col
lege president obtained by the
Wilkes Art Guild.
Dr. Thompson spoke to accept
the gift which was painted by
James Wallace King of Winston-
Salem.
“The honeymoon lasted four
years and now its all legal.”
So spoke Dr. Howard E. Thomp
son in his address at the inau
guration and dedication of new
ly founded Wilkes Community
College.
The presidency of Dr. Thomp
son, now in his fifth year, was
made official at the ceremony
which was a part of the Great
State of Wilkes program in the
county.
Charles W. Johnson, Presi
dent of the Student Government
Association at Wilkes Commu
nity College, gave the greeting
from the student body and Mrs.
Brenda B. Moore, Instructor in
English, presented the greeting
from the faculty at the college.
Following Mrs. Moore, Dr.
I.E. Ready, Director of the De
partment of Community Colleges
gave a welcoming address from
his office and the greeting from
the State Board of Education
was given by Dr. W. Dallas
Herring, Chairman of the State
Board.
In Charge of the investiture
of the president was Judge Ro
bert M. Gambill, Chairman of the
Board of Trustees of the college.
Dr. Thompson gave the re
sponse in which he reminisced
on four years with the college.
The dedication ceremony was
handled by Richard B. Johnston,
Chairman of the Buildings and
Grounds Committee of the Board
of Trustees. In the ceremony,
the three newly finished build
ings were dedicated in honor
of Charles Fred Lovette, Judge
