Killed In Accident
James Edward Martin, 26, an
instructor of the Industrial Man
agement Program at Wilkes Co
mmunity College was killed on
Saturday, March 23 by a falling
tree.
The Wilkes instructor, and
president of the WCC chapter of
the North Carolina Education As
sociation was pronounced dead on
arrival at Ashe Memorial Hosp
ital at Jefferson following the ac
cident which happened in the
Green Valley Community at
Creston.
It was reported that Martin
was helping his father cut timber
and was on a tractor when he was
struck by a falling tree.
Dean C. Jones Jr., Ashe county
coroner, ruled the death due to
head injuries in the accident,

VISITS WCC
WELCOMES SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION
A team of nine men recently
invaded the campus of Wilkes
Community College. They were
representatives of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Sec-
oncary Schools.
Leading the group was Dr.
Marvin Baker of the South Plains
College, Levelland, Texas, who
is chairman of the group, which
was made up of professors and
administrators from colleges and
universities throughout the U-
nited States.
The Southern Association is an
organization which requires high
standards in order for a school
to become a member, a mem
bership which would meanalotto
the students and college as stu
dents would receive a higher
rating coming from a two-year
college which is a member of the
Association.
Dr, Howard E, Thompson, pre
sident of Wilkes Community Col
lege, showed optimism toward
the chances of Wilkes becoming
a member.
